foster the people :: heart of gold (neil young cover) live at criminal records, atlanta, ga 6/30/2011 from Emily Hogan on Vimeo.
Foster the People will return to Atlanta on June 7 and we’re giving away tickets! Fill out the form below to enter.
Los Angeles-based indie-pop three-piece Foster the People have been rocking crowds all over since 2009. Since their hit song “Pumped Up Kicks” went viral, they’ve been unstoppable. They released their debut album, Torches, in May 2011. They’ve topped the rock charts, appeared on popular talk shows, and they’ve gained success with both indie and mainstream audiences. The last time they were here in Atlanta they played a free, acoustic in-store to a packed crowd at Criminal Records and sold out the Masquerade Music Park.
Tickets go one sale for their show at the Verizon Wireless at Encore Park on Friday, December 16. Tickets will be available HERE.

Wow! As the end of September rolls around there are a ton of cool concerts and events going on throughout this city. Bieber sitings, Usher, Ray LaMontagne, and so, so, so much more! Honestly this might be one of those weekends you wish you could teleport yourself to several events at once! Enjoy your weekend filled with fun and music!
Friday, Sept. 16 – Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger at Aaron’s Lakewood Amphitheater
Get your school vintage tees out, this show is going to definitely wake up the neighborhood!
Friday, Sept. 16 – Gringo Star at The Earl
Atlanta boys Gringo Star are back and rocking the hipsters with their trippy sound.
Friday, Sept. 16 – The Issues at Smith’s Olde bar
Burlesque Girls and Rock, oh my! The Issues are joined by other local swank acts, The Sexual Side Effects, and Asphalt Valentine.
As many children who grow up to be music-heads, there was some concert or event, that totally made you who you are. For me, that was The Who. My dad worshiped that band, and thus The Who was my first concert. I was blown away. Fortunately, we live in a city where all of these amazing moments can be experienced anytime of the week. Here are some of my picks for some cool things to do tonight.
-It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater when legendary, Roger Daultry of The Who, performs Tommy, in its entirety.
-Country hit songwriter, Kevin Welch, is having his CD release right here in one of the best venues in town, Smith’s Olde Bar. With long time respect for his gothic country songs, this is a show not to be missed.
-It’s a hip-hop heaven at the Tabernacle, when two of the most legendary foot soldiers of the Wu-Tang Clan, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah reunite to perform Raekwon’s epic 1995 debut, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, in full.
-Actung! German digital hardcore group, Atari Teenage Riot, will be shredding on the guitars in Heaven at The Masquerade,; joining them will be Otto Von Schirach and Social Espionage.
-The sweetest event of the night will be happening at The Earl, where The Lexi Street Band and Waller will be rocking to raise money for East Atlanta’s newest little bundle of joy, Porter Thomas Hood, who decided to grace the world with his presence three months early.
Feel that folks? It’s the lack of unbearable heat in our fair city. Yup, that’s right – the bearable heat has returned to Atlanta. Which means that fall can’t be far behind right? If you stand still long enough in the early morning or late at night (which is more likely, right?), you’ll even feel the cool breeze that we’ve been missing for months now. In our opinion, this is a great reason to get out into the city and check out one of the plethora of gigs that we have lined up for you below. There’s even a great festival in Decatur with tunes and food that must be perfect for enjoying the late summer weather. … Continue Reading
Indie crossovers Death Cab for Cutie played to a sweaty but energetic crowd of giddy fans on Thursday night. The band played a packed set that saw them try out some new tracks from their latest release, Codes and Keys, including the “VH1 Storytellers”-featured song “You Are A Tourist,” which was warmly accepted by fans as a new Death Cab standard.
The gig was an extra-festive affair, with it being the birthday of the band’s fearless leader, Ben Gibbard. Gibbard was extra-chatty, mentioning to a shirtless guy in the crowd that the show was rated PG-13. Gibbard then had the crowd confirm that the guy had his pants on and asked him to please keep his pants on as this was a family event and laughed. The crowd was really getting into the birthday spirit with birthday balloons being thrown up on stage as well as the random scream of “Happy birthday!” from the audience.

We are so spoiled for choice this weekend! There are huge names galore, and of course there’s some great local gigs, as well as a couple of comedy legends thrown in for good measure.
Oh thank the Heavens, it’s Thursday! Thursday is definitely the new black. Here are a couple of cool events to get your weekend started right!
-Death Cab for Cutie will be taking their coolness out to Alpharetta at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, playing with Frightened Rabbit.
-Have you had a chance to check out The Basement in East Atlanta yet? Well, get out your afro and get ready to boogie down tonight at their disco dance party HOT AND STICKY!

I imagine optimism incarnate to look somewhat like Dolly Parton. This past Wednesday, Parton burst onto the Verizon Amphitheatre stage, glittering fiddle in hand and decked out in a blinding white satin dress smattered in silver sequins. Seeing her gleefully flounce around to a mashup of Katrina and the Waves’ infectious “Walking on Sunshine” and the inspiring “Shine Like the Sun” (off Parton’s latest album Better Day) forced even the most curmudgeon, jaded journalist to grin. Toward the end of “Sunshine,” Parton stood mid-stage positioning herself as our positivity prophet and declared, “We need to feel good!”
Parton’s mission of late is just that. With Better Day and the corresponding world tour, she’s aiming to replace thoughts of war, natural disasters and declining salaries with pure, unabashed hope… and she’s wildly succeeding. By the time she launched into her 1977 pop smash “Here You Come Again” almost two hours later, I was swaying back and forth, arm in arm, with Jan, a farmer’s wife and mother of four, who’d driven two hours from Eatonton, Ga. We’d only just met when the concert began, but Jan and I represented the thousands of others in the crowd—we were all in the same blissful boat where people actually cared for their fellow man. Any negativity was gone. We’d been Dollyized.
Continuing in that spirit, here are five easy ways to Dollyize your day to make it a little better:
5) Watch Dolly Rap: During her Atlanta set, Parton sang cuts from her upcoming film Joyful Noise, which she shot here in Atlanta with Queen Latifah. Discussing the storyline prompted Parton to take some loving jabs at Latifah, but on the latter’s musical turf: rap. No high-minded message here, just a good laugh at Parton’s expense.
A couple of oldies but goodies are descending upon our little city tonight, so make sure you spend your hump day doing something fun!
-There might be a lot of blonds in Tinseltown, but no one can command the stage like Ms. Dolly Parton. Check out the Queen of Twang herself at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta.
-But perhaps you want to get your classic fix somewhere else? Legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson will be entertaining the Baby Boomers at the Classic Chastain Amphitheater.
- The launch of Gilt City Atlanta will be celebrated with a private, Gilt City members-only concert at The Loft featuring a performance by famed English rapper, Tinie Tempeh. Tickets to this private event will be available to Gilt City Atlanta members.
-But it is Shark Week, so for all of you rogues out there North Carolina heavy metal band Corrosion of Conformity will be thrashing around the land of the scensters, giving even the most hipster of them all whiplash.
-Oh yeah, and then there is that other famous blond LADY GAGA! Well maybe not the real Gaga, but the perhaps the best ALL MALE Lady Gaga tribute band, Rad Bromance, will be performing their critically acclaimed act at Smith’s Olde Bar.

The scene out in front of the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre held a magical nostalgia with too-young-to-be-hippies camped out with babies and dogs waving fingers in the air to signal the need for a free ticket in. To a casual observer, it would appear a documentary on the late ’60s or mid-’70s, but these fans held the same spirit of those in protesting war and following the Dead on tour. It made me wonder what the boys in the band really thought about the devoted fans; beyond appreciation there could just be a sort of sadness for those refusing to accept the moments of the present. Looking through the posted set lists from the recent (and all) shows, lets fans know that by following the band you really do get a new show each and every night. The Dead was a band that blossomed live and most of the recorded music came from those live shows. … Continue Reading

Death Cab for Cutie
Codes and Keys
Atlantic
By Al Kaufman
Thanks to iTunes and other sites, the concept of the album is all but gone. Bands still release CDs, but they are just afterthoughts. They put their “reach out and grab you” song first, usually something a bit different as the third or fourth track, and then fill the rest with slight variations on their theme, also known as filler. With Codes and Keys, Death Cab for Cutie, indie rock gods of the ’90s, have created an album in the true sense of the word. … Continue Reading
