Virginia-Highland Summerfest 2013 Preview

The Virginia-Highland Summerfest is almost upon us! Come celebrate 30 years of art, music and fun by participating in the variety of activities Summerfest has to offer.

Summerfest 2013 begins with a 5k race on 8am Saturday morning. This year over 1,400 runners will navigate the streets of Virginia-Highland, timed by electronic chips. At this point it’s too late to register but it’s bound to be an entertaining race! You’ll want to check out the Tot Trot as well. Directly after the 5k, children five and under get their turn to shine, racing through a course set up in the Inman Middle School field.

Speaking of children, don’t forget to swing the little ones by Kidsfest! Located on the west side of John Howell Park near Arcadia, Kidsfest features a plethora of mostly free activities between 10am and 3pm. This child-friendly section of Summerfest even boasts its own band stage, showcasing performers from the neighborhood and Eclectic Music students.

When the kids (and their bands) have worn you out, recharge by supporting the festival vendors and local restaurants then head to the Artist Market. Booths lining Virginia Avenue will display art in a variety of media. You’re sure to find something you love, and the range of prices won’t break your budget.

Finally, try to catch some music while you’re out this weekend! Live performances begin on the Virginia-Highland Island Acoustic Stage starting the evening of May 31st from 8-11pm and continuing June 1st from 9-11pm. The Summerfest Music Stage hosts even more performances throughout the day. This year’s lineup features Jason Isbell, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet and more!
