Weekend Picks 10/31-11/2

Happy Halloween, Atlanta! We hope you all are as excited as we are for a fun-filled weekend, so, to get you even more excited, we have the low-down on what is happening this weekend.

Friday, October 31st

Curtis Harding at 529

Soul isn’t a feeling, a sound or a movement. It’s a connection, a current in the air–the spark of recognition, emotions leaping across live wires.Curtis Harding says that soul music, and his music, speak for themselves. It’s self-evident on the Atlanta artist’s debut, Soul Power. The driving sound of his electrified Stratocaster, the foot-stomping backbeat and the lyrics swimming in reverb–with something this flourishing, it’s almost reductive to just dig around the roots.

The Polish Ambassador w/ Liminus at Terminal West

For the Polish Ambassador project, born on the richly-colored streets of Chicago and San Francisco, infectious melody is paramount. However, this never overshadows the depth and harmonic complexity that have made the Ambassador a favorite amongst festival curators and beat aficionados worldwide. Over the course of 6 years, his sound has dipped and swirled through a staggering range of styles, with each album exploring uncharted sonic territory. Warm, analogue dreamwave; mind-altering glitch; world-infused groove; bass-fueled breaks; sexified downtempo; electric lullabies; and psy-fi funk are just a few of the genres that have poured from the Ambassador’s soul into earbuds and ghetto-blasters across the galaxy.

Tickets are $17-$20. Doors open at 8pm.

Katey Red at The Drunken Unicorn

You do not need to spend much time in New Orleans to realize that it occupies a unique position within the pantheon of American cities. Thus began my indoctrination into the church of what folks refer to locally, but not derogatorily, as Sissy Bounce. “It’s not Sissy Bounce,” originator of the form, and reigning queen of the scene, Katey Red schooled me, when I talked to her the other day. “It’s Bounce music. It’s just sissies doing it.” Katey, who is 6’2” and performs—and looks damn good—in short skirts and heels, was the first of the openly gay M.C.’s to get on the mic and get recognized, back in ’98 at a hall near the infamous Melpomene housing projects, where she grew up. Katey was signed to a local Bounce label, Take Fo’, and soon other queer performers began to show up on the scene, folks like Sissy Nobby, Vockah Redu, and Big Freedia. – Brett Berk of Vanity Fair

Tickets cost $8 in advance, $10 day of show. Doors open at 9pm.

Antje Duvekot at Eddie’s Attic

“‘New Siberia’ is a special album to me because the songs are wiser,” says songwriter Antje Duvekot. “They have an age to them that should resonate with anyone who’s struggled through a difficult period and come out better. There’s something really sweet in being able to look back on a journey like that, from a darker, younger self to a better, older place.” For years, her songs have been critically praised for their hard-won wisdom, dark-eyed realism, and street-smart romanticism. Fans will certainly find all of that in ‘New Siberia.’

General admission tickets are $10 in advance, $14 at the door. Table seats are $12.50 each and must be purchased in multiples of 4. Online, phone, and outlet sales close at 4pm on the day of the show. Doors open at 5pm.

Avi Buffalo at Eddie’s Attic

Embarking upon a sophomore effort can be a daunting task for any young upstart, and there’s no denying Avi Buffalo’s own bar was set quite high with 2010’s celebrated eponymous debut. Fear not, dear fans/family/friends/friends of friends/newcomers, there’s nothing in this tale about The Second Album—a.k.a. At Best Cuckold, due September 8th in Europe and September 9th in North America on Sub Pop—that even remotely resembles a slump; in fact, it would be entirely appropriate to say that this Long Beach, California, enterprise is getting better with age.

General admission tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Table seats are $12.50 each and must be purchased in multiples of 4. Online, phone, and outlet sales close at 5pm on the day of the show.
