What’s Up Monday? March 18th

thao & TGDSDIt’s the start of a new week and a new show lineup! We are stoked about the shows happening this week. Get down with Thao & The Get Down Stay Down tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar or have a laugh with some friends at the Catch 23 Comedy Match at The Earl! Here’s the full lineup:

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down w/ Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside @ Smith’s Olde Bar
We the Common is the newly releazed, third full-length album from critically acclaimed artist Thao & the Get Down Stay Down. The album is the follow-up to Thao’s 2009 release Know Better Learn Faster, which Pitchfork praised for its “warm exuberance that keeps the music spry” while SPIN noted that Thao’s “lazily smoky voice has its bitterly harsh moments, but her coolly analytical self-awareness stings the most.” The New York Times raves, “Ms. Nguyen’s voice, wobbly and rich, is engaging, and her gently confessional lyrics…are equally beguiling.”

Krief (of The Dears) @ Smith’s Olde Bar (Atlanta Room)
Dating back to his first release, 2007’s Take It Or Leave EP, and continuing with 2009’s Calm Awaits as Black Diamond Bay, Krief’s songwriting and recording processes have remained remarkably consistent, meaning almost entirely solitary affairs. For the self-produced, self-mixed Hundred Thousand Pieces though, Krief was committed to write an album that bore no relation to his vaunted live performances, where his guitar virtuosity tends to take centre stage. That’s not to say the ambitious Hundred Thousand Pieces is his least guitar-driven effort yet – he did after all record around 15 guitar tracks for each song – but it was his first concerted attempt to create music that was strongly evocative, inspired by his work scoring films. Capturing the perfect sounds he envisioned meant having an attention to detail far beyond his previous works. Krief played nearly all the instruments himself (with help from former Black Diamond Bay member Roberto Piccioni), and he also composed the complex, melodically independent string, brass and choir arrangements.

Songwriter’s Open Mic @ Eddie’s Attic
For over 19 years, Eddie’s Attic has hosted Atlanta’s premiere Songwriter’s Open Mic for the performing songwriter. National and local acts perform 2 songs each, with 3 finalists returning for a third song at the end of the evening for a chance to win a cash prize and a spot in our bi-annual, nationally acclaimed Open Mic Shootout. This is a great opportunity for up and coming talent to hone their skills and for listeners to see and meet tomorrow’s stars.

Catch 23: Atlanta’s Friendliest Comedy Death Match @ The Earl
3 Teams. 23 Minutes. 4 Rounds. Because nothing says “hilarious comedy” like a series of numbers. If you’re looking for a laugh, The Earl is the place to be tonight!

Arise the Titan @ The Masquerade
If you’re looking for a heavy rock and metal show, then the Masquerade is the place to be tonight!
