What’s Up Thursday? January 16

the-shadowboxers

Tonight in Atlanta, two super fantabulous local acts, The Shadowboxers and Brandon Stiles, are playing two super fantabulous concerts and professional power pop legend Paul Collins will take the stage at the EARL. So many great shows, so little time…

The Shadowboxers @ Eddie’s Attic

Also Appearing: Little Tybee

The Atlanta-based Shadowboxers have a passion for captivating lyrics, tight harmonies, and soulful vocals. Founding members Scott Schwartz, Matt Lipkins, and Adam Hoffman experienced an almost-instantaneous musical compatibility when they first started jamming. They’ve forged a cohesive sound based on a shared reverence for the strong, taut harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel, D’Angelo, and The Beatles. This young band’s unified sound has an R&B-soaked, smart perspective replete with an abundance of vocal talent and songwriting skill. In the short time they’ve been playing together, the Shadowboxers have found a collective voice that is intelligent, soulful, and catchy. Oh, they also did an awesome interview with us the other day.

Doors at 6:30pm. Tickets are $12 in advance. Online and phone sales end at 5pm.

Paul Collins’ Beat @ The EARL

Also Appearing: Paradise Diet

Rock icon and cult favorite Paul Collins got his start in 1974, touring with The Ramones and later recording a song called “Hanging On The Telephone.” The song would become a hit once covered by Deborah Harry and Blondie on the Parallel Lines album. In 1977, Paul Collins formed The Beat, recruiting members of various rock bands. The result was a high energy rock group in the style of The Ramones, Blondie and The Dictators. As the story goes, Collins was awarded a record deal with CBS thanks to his friend Eddie Money and Bill Graham Management. The Beat played with many bands including The Jam, The Police, Eddie Money and Huey Lewis. Paul Collins’ Beat continued to tour and record albums throughout the ’80s. Now they’re back, playing shows together around the globe. But tonight, Atlanta!
