Lonnie Holley @ Eddie’s Attic

Since 1979, Holley has devoted his life to the practice of improvisational creativity. His art, born out of struggle, hardship, but perhaps more importantly, out of furious curiosity, has manifested itself in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance and most recently in music. Holley’s sculptures are constructed from found materials in the oldest tradition of African American sculpture. Objects, already imbued with cultural and artistic metaphor, are combined into narrative sculptures that commemorate places, people, and events. Holley’s music and lyrics are improvised on the spot and morph and evolve with every event, concert, and recording. In Holley’s original art environment, he would construct and deconstruct his visual works, repurposing their elements for new pieces. This often led to the transfer of individual narratives into the new work creating a cumulative composite image that has depth far beyond its original meaning. The layers of sound in Holley’s music, likewise, are the result of decades of experimentation. His performance at Eddie’s will truly be a once-in-a-lifetime show.

Matt Owen & The Eclectic Tuba @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Matt Owen & The Eclectic Tuba is an instrumental psychedelic space-funk group that originated on Mars and migrated toward Birmingham, Alabama in early 2012. The Eclectic Tuba takes the audience on a joy ride through the cosmos with trippy lights, ripping synthesizers, funky tuba loops, Latin percussive grooves and soaring saxophone solos. 2012 was an exciting inaugural year on Earth for The Eclectic Tuba. In May, the band came in third place in the SonicBids: Road To Roo Competition. The tuba in the competition caught the eye of a few promoters and the group was able to do an extensive East Coast tour, traveling to Manhattan and back multiple times that summer. After the tour, The Eclectic Tuba was given multiple opportunities to open for fantastic acts including Maps and Atlases, Fishbone and New Fumes. Aside from the Eclectic Tuba, Matt performed with Amanda Palmer and The Grand Theft Orchestra and with The Polyphonic Spree. The Eclectic Tuba brings a show that captivates the minds of audiences everywhere, taking them on a quick trip to space!

Tickets are $10. Online and phone sales end at 2pm. Doors at 7pm.
