What’s Up Thursday? March 7th

hesmybrother

Things are poppin’ tonight! Tons of shows happening and we love it. From dance-y indie rock to classic rock, and chilled out folk, take your pick and enjoy this Thursday evening!

He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister w/ Paper Bird & Shakey Graves @ The Earl

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister seem to invite a broad range of colorful words to describe their music and performances: “flamboyant folk,” “psych-acoustic,” “estranged and glamorous” and “vaudeville-y.” No doubt this is due to their mélange of musical styles, both modern and antique; their eccentric attire and sense of expression, both sincere and theatrical; and, their unique instrumentation, which includes a rhythm section bolstered by a tap dancer.

Deadstring Brothers @ Peachtree Tavern

From the classic rock echoes that hang heavy like the reefer smoke in the rafters of Detroit’s Cobo Hall, to the soul reflected in the alleys and small faces of London’s Heavy Load scene to the exile off Main Street, few bands channel the sonic groove generated at the headwaters of our rock-and-roll DNA like Deadstring Brothers.

Richard Shindell @ Eddie’s Attic

Shindell’s songwriting is truly eclectic, ranging from lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs, to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics, prejudice, war and religion. He has a unique ability to morph into the soul of the many and varied personalities he casts as narrators in certain songs–songs that are veritable novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies, sometimes including cryptic, revelations through the eyes of a woman.

The Aggrolites @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Out of the Los Angeles school of hard knocks, The Aggrolites have earned a Ph.D in “feel good music.” On the road they educate with the thunder and punch of the reggae drums and bass, the ripping, soulful melodies of the organ and guitars, and Jesse Wagner’s voice – a gift from the heavens, a perfectly intact gift from Otis, Sam, Ray and Wilson.

The Ruby Suns @ Drunken Unicorn

McPhun of (The Ruby Suns) makes his own brand of pop—accessible and unconventional, ethereal and concise, modern and timeless. New album, The Ruby Suns Christopher—is said to be “a high-fi, meta-disco, headphonic roller-skating jam for lovers” written and recorded over the course of several years, several world tours and several separate bands.

Buddy Wakefield @ Eddie’s Attic

Buddy Wakefield is the two-time Individual World Poetry Slam Champion featured on NPR, the BBC, HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, and most recently signed to Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records. In 2004 he won the Individual World Poetry Slam Finals thanks to the support of anthropologist and producer Norman Lear then successfully defended that title at the International Poetry Festival in Rotterdam, Netherlands against the national champions of seven European countries with works translated into Dutch.
