What’s Up Tuesday? October 22

Jessie Ware1On this day in 1966, The Supremes became the first all-female music group to attain a No. 1 selling album with The Supreme’s A’ Go-Go and in 2012, Taylor Swift’s latest album, Red was released! Here’s what’s happening on this day in 2013.

Jessie Ware with Mikky Ekko @ The Loft

For Jessie Ware, singing is the easy part. Uncannily beautiful vocals have been pouring out of this London native since she was kid. It’s the path from “Girl With That Voice” to full-fledged pop star that’s proved trickier. She has been nominated for two Brit awards and her debut album, Devotion reached the Top 5 in England. But it wasn’t until the release of the If You’re Never Gonna Move EP this winter and subsequent US tour that American audiences got wind of the singer’s unique power. With the US release of Devotion, featuring two new tracks, Ware’s love affair with America seems to have only just begun. We interviewed Jessie and you can check it out here!

Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are $20. Online and phone sales close at 4pm today!

Grocery on Home Presents, Live from Eddie’s Attic: Rusty Belle and Barnaby Bright @ Eddie’s Attic

Rusty Belle began with the quiet determination to make unique music. starting in their living rooms and working their way through coffee shops, bars, clubs, listening rooms, concert halls, and festival stages, they developed a style all their own. Rusty Belle swings easily from sweet, simple melodies, whiskey lullabies, blood ballads, busted bluegrass, and folk-punk anthems, to tongue-in-cheek sleaze-rock, glossy-mag candy-pop, and down-home porch-tunes. The remarkable thing is that its all done with honesty and respect for the music. their shows are never predictable and always dynamic. At their best they will bring to you sweet nostalgia, swaggering poise, drunken logic, and grimy dancing before sending you home with a gentle “goodnight.”

Doors open at 6:30pm. Advance general admission tickets are $10.

Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Nearly a decade after folk-rock duo Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion put out their first album together, the husband-and-wife pair feel like they’ve finally hit their stride on Wassaic Way, a collection of 11 new songs to be released August 6th on Rte 8 Records. Sarah Lee is the daughter of Arlo Guthrie, and the granddaughter of the iconic folk singer Woody Guthrie, whose unfinished songs Wilco recorded with Billy Bragg on a pair of Mermaid Avenue albums in 1998 and 2000. Wilco also invited Sarah Lee and Johnny to perform at the band’s Solid Sound Festival in 2011, and the duo had toured with the Autumn Defense, Sansone’s project with Wilco bassist John Stirratt.

Saintseneca with Hare and the Hounds @ The Earl

Anti- is thrilled to announce the signing of Saintseneca, a young band from Columbus, Ohio led by singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Zac Little. The group utilizes a wide range of instrumentation (violin, mandolin, dulcimer, Turkish Baglama, floor percussion) with the more contemporary elements such as synthesizers and electric guitars to create a unique merging of rustic and modern. Folk and country motifs converge seamlessly with soaring vocals and a vibrant post-punk energy.

While the group formed in Columbus, Ohio, a majority of Saintseneca’s members, including songwriter Little, hail from the rural hills of Appalachia. It is a landscape that has infused the group’s expansive and evocative music with a deep sense of introspection. “I was raised on farms in Appalachia, “Little explains, “And I think that my perspective on music was shaped by where I grew up. Being so isolated played a huge role in my music and in the subjects I write about.”

Doors open at 8:30pm. Tickets are $10 the day of the show. Online, phone, and outlet sales end at 6pm today!
