What’s Up Wednesday? October 16

Hanni El KhatibHello beautiful people! We hope you’re having a fantastic Wednesday so far! Check out some of the great shows happening tonight!

Hanni El Khatib with Bass Drum of Death @ The Earl

When Hanni El Khatib started out, he was just a skater kid playing the world’s worst guitar and singing by himself. But in 2010 from a chance meeting, up-and-coming indie label Innovative Leisure recognized that there was something huge hiding in those little songs. And so El Khatib made his official full-power soul ‘n’ rock ‘n’ roll debut (on vinyl too) in 2010. In 2012, Hanni El Khatib showed up to record his second album with just the clothes on his back—no guitar, no fancy almost-finished demos, and only about three weeks time to get from start to finish. While on tour, he’d met Dan Auerbach in a bar in Paris and after some whiskey got involved, they decided to partner up in Auerbach’s studio in Nashville. The idea was to erase everything he’d become comfortable with and to make an album out of only raw instinct and inspiration. The result is Head In The Dirt, produced by Auerbach, in which El Khatib takes a lucky eleven songs and makes the entire history of rebel music something all his own. The plan that first day in Nashville might have been to make something out of nothing—but by the end of Head In The Dirt, you’ll realize that Hanni El Khatib actually made something out of everything. You can check out an interview we did with him last year here!
Doors open at 8:30pm.

Penny & Sparrow with Alex Page and Jillette Johnson @ Eddie’s Attic

Penny & Sparrow are a compelling Austin duo with a stripped down return-to-basics mentality that yields extraordinary sonic results. They (Kyle and Andy) understand you don’t need gimmicks to make beautiful music that cuts someone to the core and woos to keep their tunes on repeat for days on end. They write music that effortlessly draws you in with their rich harmonies and deep, moving lyrics that are intimate and relational in nature: Music reminiscent of Bon Iver and The Swell Season. They write music they would want to listen to….and that basic recipe is working for everyone. The duo enjoys playing the stage with and in support of other musicians they admire; including Alex Page (who played strings on Penny & Sparrow’s album Tenboom), David Ramirez and Matthew Mayfield. Penny & Sparrow begin their October Tour with a show at Austin’s Stubb’s Stage where they are playing an ACL After Party in support of Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon’s side project, The Shouting Matches, and The Blind Boys of Alabama.
Doors open at 6:00 pm.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $14 at the door.
Online, phone, and outlet sales end at 5pm TODAY.

James Maddock @ Eddie’s Attic

James Maddock affirms his status as a fixture in the folk and Americana scene with ‘Another Life,’ his new album out July 23rd on Jullian Records. As NPR says of the British transplant, “his timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy.” Nodding to ‘70s rock with shimmering acoustic guitars, an understated rhythm section and flourishes of fiddle, mandolin, piano and dobro, ‘Another Life’ bridges the mainstream appeal of songwriters like Jesse Harris and Norah Jones and the quirkier sensibility of Loudon Wainwright. With funding entirely from fan contributions through PledgeMusic, Maddock worked with producer Matt Pierson, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell (who’s played with Bob Dylan and Levon Helm) and bassist Tony Scherr (who plays with Norah Jones).
General admission tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
Online and phone sales close at 5pm TODAY.

Billy Buchanan @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Billy Buchanan’s music is best described as street smart soul meets southern fried rock and roll. Imagine Cee Lo Green hanging out in Motown with The Allman Brothers. Soulful, passionate, musical, and fun! Unapologetically wearing his influences on his sleeve, Buchanan borrows from the best, all the while creating his own unique blend of soul, modern funk, and blues based rock. Carefully wrapped in clever grooves, contagious riffs, soaring melodies, skillfully crafted chord progressions, and thought provoking lyrics, Buchanan’s music is fresh yet pleasantly familiar. His forthcoming album, Fact Fiction & Other Contradictions, is at iTunes, Amazon.com, and other digital retailers now.
Tickets are $12.
Online and phone sales end at 2pm TODAY.

Gary Clark Jr. @ The Tabernacle

The only thing growing faster than Gary Clark Jr.’s acclaim — among fans, critics and iconic musicians alike — is the scope of his talents and tastes. Perhaps the most succinct summation of Clark’s musical vision and what lies ahead can be taken from a recent interview where he imparts: “Music is movement. It all moves together, like lifetimes—a continuum. It’s all part of the same fabric in the end.”
Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm.

Doesin with Phossy Jaw and Surrogates @ The Drunken Unicorn

On a dark and stormy night in October 2012, three young men from Atlanta got together to play some music. After several hours of fruitless jamming, the exhausted trio fell into a deep sleep and all dreamed the same curious dream. In this dream, they were visited by a wizard named Doesin, who told them that “musician” was secretly another word for “magician”, and that the songs they heard in their sleep were the beat to which the universe itself pulsed. When they awoke, they noticed that if they listened carefully, the songs they heard in their dream were still playing softly in the back of their heads! The trio promptly named themselves after the wizard and set out to restore peace, love and funkiness to the universe. This is that band, and these are those songs.
Tickets are $5 for 21+ and $7 for those under 21. Doors open @ 9pm.
