Mr. Aparo has had his compositions recorded by McGraw before as well as by Faith Hill and Miley Cyrus, among others, and has appeared on stage and recordings with Hill, Edwin McCain, Matchbox20 and The Zac Brown Band to name but a few. For 2012, Angie has a new solo album and book in the works, and a cartoon in development. He joined us for our 5GB series before his show on Saturday as part of the BMI Songwriter’s Series at Eddie’s Attic.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Queen.. I was (and still am) fascinated with their construction of songs. They were not afraid to break the traditional pop format. And they fkng rock! Their influence lives in me now more than ever. I’m currently in production on my new record (2013 release) and I’m experimenting with the idea of the musical form facilitating the emotion of lyric at every turn. Exchanging the traditional verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge for a more fluid interaction between melody and word. I guess every song is a sort of three minute musical..haha

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

My first gig in NYC (1996). I made $4 and it was perfect. I felt like my dream had officially begun. I gave the money to a homeless guy on the curb next to the club. Best night ever.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

My son playing cello in his school orchestra. Christmas concert. Jesus was very happy.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

Honestly..every show feels that way for me. The stage, like writing, is such an internal thing for me that in a weird way the venue doesn’t matter. I’m cognitive of the audience but I’m really exploring emotion and connectivity while I’m up there and hopefully that’s entertaining to people.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Actually, that’s an interesting question because in the future the artist will play gigs from his/her dream state and they’ll imagine the venue and the audience and then the people who they imagined will wake up in some far away place and say holy shit! That rocked! Then the artist will wake up from his “dream” pod and he will be nourished with efficient food pebbles by the National Agency of Arts who will decide that the artist would be more productive if he/she had six arms and two brains and that’s where robots come from.
