Atlanta Music Guide Weekend Preview 10/11/18 – 10/14/18

Here’s a quick look at some of the best events Atlanta has to offer this weekend Thursday, October 11th through Sunday, October 14th!

Carl Craig (Extended Set) at Wildpitch Music Hall

Friday, October 12th at 10:00pm

Event Link

LOW TICKET WARNING! LESS THAN 50 TICKETS AVAILABLE!

Dancefloor experimentalist and top Detroit techno producer Carl Craig has few equals in terms of the artistry, influence, and diversity of his recordings. Carl Craig is described as a creative visionary, an electronic music icon, an esteemed Grammy-nominated composer, a world-class DJ and an ambassador for his native Detroit. Yet the common thread that runs through Craig’s broad musical canon and creative projects is a resounding fascination with futurism. The prolific producer has cultivated a unique path as an artist, entrepreneur and civic leader, guided by his tendency toward forward thinking. “My livelihood is making music that I can perform, whether I’m doing orchestral production or modular strangeness or generating club music. I don’t restrict myself,” said Craig. “I defined myself by being who I am. The ultimate self respect is when you say you’re going to do something and you go and do it to the best of your ability.”

SOB x RBE at The Loft

Saturday, October 13th at 7:00pm

Event Link

SOB X RBE is the biggest thing to come out of Vallejo since Mac Dre and, like the late Bay Area pioneer, the group makes rap songs that capture both the exuberant energy and gritty foundation of their Northern California soil. The four-man group comes from a small city with a rich rap history and, over the last two years, they’ve built on the groundwork that was laid before them, taking their homegrown sound to new heights.

The Artisanals w/ The Pollies at The Earl

Saturday, October 13th at 8:00pm

Event Link

With sonic influences ranging from the heartland rock of Bruce Springsteen (“Angel 42”), and neo-psychedelia anthems of My Morning Jacket (“Pound The Rock”), to the dream-pop work of The Cars and The War On Drugs (“Drag”), The Artisanals 10-track LP showcases Delaware and Houle’s knack for writing hooks as well as their ear for quality production. The album utilizes everything from a gong, organ, piano, sitar, french horn, trombone, and koto, to a string section sourced from the nearby University of Iowa. Mastered by Howie Weinberg, (Spoon, Ryan Adams, Nirvana), there’s no filler on The Artisanals. From start to finish, this record is a straight banger.

CUSSES w/ HolyBeach, Shehehe & Twin Criminal at 529

Saturday, October 13th at 9:00pm

Event Link

Power(house) trio Cusses originally hailed from Savannah, currently residing in Nashville, now which isn’t necessarily known as a rock ‘n’ roll hotbed but should be on the radar of scene-watchers everywhere if this 2-guy, 1-gal combo is any signpost. That they have Los Angeles and NYC roots is immediately evident, however, as the ten tracks on their self-titled debut fairly bleed at the seams: there’s a classic glam-slam punk core here bolstered by touches of hardcore, psychedelic garage and metallic grunge, vocalist Angel Bond yelping and snarling with operatic abandon against Bryan Harder’s massive sheets of guitars and Brian Lackey’s thunderous avalanche of percussion.

Atlanta Rhythm Section at Heritage Sandy Springs

Sunday, October 14th at 6:30pm

Event Link

From their start as the house band at the famed Studio One, to playing for tens of thousands of fans at festivals and arenas, Atlanta Rhythm Section earned their place as one of the top acts in country rock. The original members of ARS came together playing as the house musicians at the famed Studio One, recording home to such country rock greats as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dicky Betts, and 38 Special. The Rhythm Section would play on other group’s albums 3-4 days a week and work on their own songs in their off time. Now with 15 albums of outstanding songwriting and performances, ARS embodies all that the phrase “classic rock” implies.

Bonus show!

Berndsen w/ Dot.s and Fantasy Guys at The Earl

Monday, October 15th at 8:00pm

Event Link

There’s no lack of remarkable musicians and interesting characters in Iceland. Take David Berndsen for instance, he’s a bearded pop icon in his home country who’s known for his obsession with all things eighties. Even though Soft Cell, OMD, Yazoo, Visage, the Human League and Ultravox have collectively been swept under the rug of musical history, they still have one hardcore fan left in Berndsen. His love for this particular period is seen in everything he does, from the music he creates, to the outfits he wears on stage, to his music videos. He’s released two records so far, Lover In The Dark (2012, released in Iceland, Germany, Netherlands and Japan) and Planet Earth (2013).

Catch this rare performance with Atlanta Indie-Pop favorites Dot.s and Fantasy Guys!
