Live Music for Thursday May 15th

KONGOS

Happy Thursday, Atlanta! You’ve made it over the hump of the week and for that you deserve a reward. Treat yo’self with one of these awesome almost-the-weekend shows.

KONGOS w/ Is Pls Pls @ The Loft

The brothers KONGOS–multi-cultural, multi-faceted, multi-instrumentalists—craft a unique and irresistible sound spawned from shared DNA, diverse influences and spot-on melodic and lyrical sensibilities. On Lunatic, their 12-song Epic Records debut, the band’s talent shines on “Come With Me Now”; the title an impossible-to-resist aural summons, the rock-alt crossover tune kicking off with the accordion, jumping into foot-stomping, staccato rhythms, slide guitar, and soaring epic soundscapes reminiscent of U2.

Tickets are $15. Doors open at 7pm. Online and phone sales close at 6pm.

Comrade Blue w/ Neil Cribbs @ Vinyl

This charity event for Rally Foundation is headlined by Atlanta band Comrade Blue
was formed when several neighbors and friends converged in a basement to jam. Already being friends or “comrades,” the band that formed was aptly named Comrade Blue. Through other friends and family, the band quickly took off and started playing Atlanta charity events as well as local venues like SweetWater Brewery, The Red Light Café, Red Brick Brewery, and Smith’s Olde Bar.

Tickets are $12. Doors open at 6:30pm. Online and phone sales end at 5:30pm.

Mystic Braves w/ Corners @ The EARL

This psych-steeped five-piece sounds like they stepped straight out of the ’60s. And not in an obvious, someone’s-been-studying-their Nuggets-comps-until-the-grooves-give-out sort of way, either. We’re talking a richer, fuller plot of references (garage-borne greats like The Electric Prunes, The Chocolate Watchband and The Music Machine) that filter the band’s hook-centric purple haze through robust organ rolls, runaway guitar riffs, heat-stroked horns and a rhythm section that can only be described as “restless”.

Tickets are $8. Doors open at 8:30pm. Online and phone sales close at 6pm.

Mike Dillon Band w/ Coltron @ 529

With his latest effort, Band of Outsiders—released via Brooklyn label The Royal Potato Family—Mike Dillon has perhaps conjured the perfect storm of all his past endeavors. His manic creative vision found its match in three young musicians he met in New Orleans. Carly Meyers—whom Dillon describes as “a High Priestess of Trombone who channels the energy of Iggy Pop through the chops of JJ Johnson in second-line parade”—provides harmonic counterpoint to his vibes and percussion (“All Walks of Life”) as she simultaneously ups the band’s art-rock ante (“Carly Hates The Dubstep”).

Tickets are $10. Doors open at 9pm. Online and phone sales close at 6pm.
