Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics

The sound of soul resides blissfully in the heart of Atlanta local band Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics. The first time I saw Ruby Velle perform live before my very eyes, I was absolutely blown away by not only the sheer magnitude of Velle’s powerful vocals, but also the pure, soulful sound created by the 7 piece band that takes you back in time to a place where music should always live.

They were voted “Atlanta’s Best Soul Band” by Creative Loafing in 2010 & 2011, and rightfully so. Originally founded in 2005 in Gainesville, FL by Velle, guitarist Scott Clayton, and organ player Spencer Garn, the band relocated to Atlanta in 2007. Just a couple years later, they landed a residency at The Star Bar in Little 5 Points and began to build a strong local following.

In 2012, the band released their first full-length album, It’s About Time, to much critical acclaim. Billboard ranked the album in the top 30 on the Heatseeker charts shortly after it was released. It’s About Time was also ranked #4 on the iTunes R&B charts.

“This is a refreshing album for a lot of reasons. First, good soul music is just too hard to come by. Second, it is refreshing because Ruby Velle has a timeless voice. You could listen to this voice all day and not get tired of it. More than that, you could listen to this voice and this album in 15 years and it would still sound good.”
