Picture Book & Live Review: Flogging Molly w/ David Hause & Skinny Lister @ Tabernacle 2/9

Flogging Molly

Photos & Review by Hillery Terenzi

Flogging Molly is a band that I’ve been wanting to see for many years now. I had extremely high expectations for Saturday’s sold out performance at the Tabernacle and they filled them all plus more. The crowd was a mixture of young and old with kilts and flat caps. Irish car bombs were the special and every other person had a Guinness in their hand. After a stellar performance from Philadelphia native, David Hause and England’s own Skinny Lister, the fans were ready to go.

Flogging Molly burst onto the stage and started the show with “Another Bag of Bricks” followed by “(No More) Paddy’s Lament”. The show was incredibly spirited and the crowd was enthusiastic, singing along with every song. I was happy to see that if someone fell down in the massive mosh pit that was the ground floor of the Tabernacle, someone would grab them and pick them right back up.

Throughout the set, Dave King interacted with his fans by calling out his favorite band T-shirts, asking if anyone was Irish, and even passing out a Guinness or two to eager fans. Even bass player Nathen Maxwell made a point to give a young fan a thumbs up for his outfit. They played a 22 song set pulling out the old favorites like “Drunken Lullabies”, “Seven Deadly Sins”, and “The Kilburn High Road” and then played an acoustic set of “The Wanderlust”, “This Present State of Grace”, “A Prayer for Me in Silence” which was sung by King’s lovely wife, Bridget Regan.

By the time it was all said and done, two hours had passed and the energy level of the crowd was at an all-time high. Encore included “Salty Dog” and a crowd favorite, “If I Ever Leave This World Alive”. Even after 15 years, Flogging Molly delivers the goods with an intensity a few bands can match. I cannot wait to see their next show.
