Shaky Knees Music Festival kicked off on Saturday and the weather really couldn’t have been worse. After multiple calls from friends, “Are you really going out in this” – I threw on my 8-year-old rain boots (note- they also look like an 8 year-old child’s rain boots -hot pink with flowers) and headed out into the monsoon. Mud puddles were unavoidable, but after after a drink or two, you just went with it. Fans were embracing the insanely wet weekend. It made us proud to see that Atlanta’s music fans were in high spirits despite the inclement weather.

The Joy Formidable were energetic and lead singer, Ritzy Bryan was straight up adorable- the sunshine that everyone needed. Gary Clark Jr. killed it on the guitar. Hendrix comparisons were flying out of the mouths of many. The best part about festivals like these, is the opportunity to find new music and it was five 17 year olds, in The Orwells, that really impressed the crowd. Fans were dancing, and for a moment The Orwells’ performance distracted us from the never-ending rain. Dedicated fans stayed on to hear Band of Horses, who even offered up an encore. BoH seemed to have fun and were grateful for the turnout.

Sunday, we had sunshine and it was a reason to celebrate. Rain boots were still a necessity, but for once we could be free from our rain jackets and ponchos. The ladies of von Grey were sweet and dripping with talent. Shovels and Rope gave us reasons to dance and rock out for a bit. Southern rockers, Drive By Truckers are always a crowd favorite. Of course, the day took a turn, and the rain came back for The Lumineers’ closing performance. The Lumineers played Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?”- which brought a smile to many faces. “Stubborn Love” was memorable and solid. Singers, Wesley Schultz and Neyla Pekare even played a new perky little duet.

We have to say that despite the less than desirable conditions, this festival ran well and Atlanta fans were surprisingly positive. Bars and bathrooms were plentiful. The shuttle was a great option and most everyone made the best of the weather situation. Congrats to promoter, Tim Sweetwood for a successful first year. We hope to see the festival return and on sunnier terms!

Next up is Party in the Park! This day-long festival will feature Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding, GROUPLOVE, Yeasayer and The Electric Sons on Saturday, May 18th at Centennial Olympic Park.
