Throw Back Thursday: 15 Questions With Andy Hull From Manchester Orchestra from 2011

This interview was originally published in May 2011.

Atlanta’s own Manchester Orchestra has done it again. The band’s sophomore album, Mean Everything to Nothing, was hailed as a masterpiece, meaning that there were a lot of expectations built up around the band’s next effort. They surpassed those expectations with their new album Simple Math. Released on May 10, Simple Math shows a more mature Manchester Orchestra; intricate songs, complicated lyrics, and a depth of emotion that is beyond their young age. I sat down with lead singer Andy Hull as part of our “15 Questions With,” and here is what he had to say:

What is the most outrageous gift you’ve ever received from a fan?

I received a hand-drawn picture of myself that was made up of every single lyric I have ever released. So awesome.

How do you like your coffee?

Half and half, 1 splenda.

If you could collaborate with any musician who would it be?

Kanye West.

Who is your biggest celebrity crush?

Those people don’t really exist. My wife is really really fine.

If you were to play for the other team for one day (or if you were a girl!) who would you most want to take on a date?

Kanye West

Can you play the ukulele?

Who can’t?? Its only four strings!!! But no, I can’t.

What was your first concert?

DC Talk and Michael W Smith at the Skydome in Toronto.

How do you feel about tequila?

I prefer whiskey. Seems to work well in a margarita. My chihuahua loves it.

If you were a race horse in the Kentucky Derby, what would your name be?

Big Jesus.

If you were the star of reality TV, what would your show be called?

It’s a concept I’ve been working on for a while. Basically it’s called “Mustang” and it’s Sean Kirkpatrick (Colour Revolt) and I travelling on Route 66. One of us in a Ford Mustang and one of us on a mustang horse. We both sleep together in the same room at night but get there at very different times. The other is with an awesome hip-hop producer from baltimore named Mo. He literally grew up during “The Wire.” I literally grew up with “TGiF” on ABC. That show will be called “Mo and Me.”

Can you dance?

I want to believe I can. But can’t.

If you could live in the shows of any musician for a week who would it be?

Stevie Wonder…..or Kanye West.

What’s your secret favorite thing to do on your day off?

Not having to take Adderall to remember my name and eating at Outback Steakhouse.

Anything you are most excited about coming up?

O’Brother. New LP. OMFG so good.
