What’s Up Thursday 12/4

Get the first weekend of December started off early with one of these concerts! There is something for everyone tonight!

Patterson Hood at Eddie’s Attic

Back in January, he was worn out from having spent a year on tour and facing a new album’s release and another year spent mostly on a bus, away from the comforts of home and family, and decided to try to write a book. He had made a couple of stabs in that direction before (as well as a couple of screenplays) but had so far failed to complete one. The thing is, he loves to write on the road. He writes most every day out there. It’s usually not songs, as completing a song amid all of the noise, distractions and music blasting on the bus is very difficult (he does often start songs there that get finished later) but writing non-musical compositions comes pretty easy for him out there.

General admission tickets are $20 in advance, $26 at the door. Table seats are $25 each and must be purchased in multiples of 4. Online, phone, and outlet sales close at 5pm on the day of the show. Doors open at 6:30pm.

MTN ISL w/ The Pinecones & Hidden Compartments at The EARL

MTN ISL’s debut EP, God Become Animal, is a seething mass of lacerating grooves and interlocking rhythms that’s equal parts wiry Midwestern math rock and classic Dischord era audio abuse. Open salvo “Super Place” is a ragged stomper paced by dissonant guitar chords and blistering stop-start dynamics, and things just continue to get better from there. “Hacer” is the most melodic and accessible of the EP’s six tracks, but it’s no less uncompromising or ferocious, moving nimbly from the spare and skeletal intro to the grinding verses, which somehow conspire to land you in the middle of a feral slough before it’s all said and done.

Tickets are $5. Online, phone, and outlet sales will close at 6pm on the day of the show. Doors open at 8:30pm.

Glass Animals at The Loft

Glass Animals vocalist and songwriter David Bayley draws influence for both music and artwork from his involvement in the world of medicine and neuroscience (at just 22 yrs old, he has studied both) creating a sound with it’s roots spread between the electronic and live instrumentation. The result is the warm, narcotic space between a downbeat, slow-burning groove and electro-pop catchiness.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 on the day of the show. Online, phone, and outlet sales close at 6pm on the day of the show. Doors open at 8pm.

High Spirits w/ Mangled & Gunpowder Gray at 529

HIGH SPIRITS began in Chicago in early 2009 with a series of fun songwriting sessions and demo recordings. Soon, there were 10 songs recorded, enough for an album. It was released as a plain white-label LP at the first HIGH SPIRITS live show, which was in August of 2009. Only a handful copies sold that night, but the rest sold quickly through the mail to fans all over the world.

Tickets are $10. Online, phone, and outlet sales close at 6pm on the day of the show. Doors open at 9pm.
