What’s Up Wednesday?

Happy Hump Day Atlanta! We are half way through the week, waaahhhoooo! The first song I heard this morning was “Wild Horses” so it looks like it’s gonna be a great day!

Hey, so there are a ton of great bands playing tonight so do yourself a favor and check one out!

-Canadian hard rockers, The Trews, are back in Atlanta and are playing at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-It’s Georgia music day at The Earl tonight where Hare and the Hounds & Sydney Eloise will be playing.

-Toronto synth-pop trio Parallels are at the Drunken Unicorn tonight, playing with Fader Vixen.

-The Milk Carton Kids, a harmonizing, minimalist duo, use two guitars and two voices to create a new combination of back-porch Americana and classic folk. Catch them tonight at Eddie’s Attic.

What’s Up Tuesday?

Bon Matin Atlanta! So, for better or worse, I judge my day by  the first song that comes on my Sirius XM channel…if it is something like Blink 182, I know I’m in for one of those days. Today, fortunately it was the little ditty above; I hope that it starts your Tuesday out right as well….

-Eddie’s Attic is certainly making it’s rounds this week! Tonight, songstresses, Neulore and Audrey Assad will be enchanting their audience.

-After three albums under the name RTX, Jennifer Herrema and her bunch decided to flip the script, to kick open the doors of perception a little bit . Black Bananas are at 529 tonight.

-The Live X series has found a new home in Hooters (obviously a Mike Kee doing…) and they are presenting 90′s rockers, Eve 6, before their show tonight at the Masquerade.

What’s Up Monday?

Happy Monday Atlanta!

-Anyone that knows me, knows I am a HUGE fan of the Old 97′s, and if I was you I would be heading to Eddie’s Attic tonight to see magnetic frontman, Rhett Miller!

-Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and now calling Colorado home, Gregory Alan Isakov has been traveling all his life. Songs that hone a masterful quality beyond his years, tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place. Check him out at Smith’s Olde Bar tonight.

-Atlanta’s Friendliest Comedy Death match is back tonight at The Earl!

-You have head them on every alt-radio station across the country, and now M83 is in Atlanta at the Buckhead Theater with Break Horses.

5GB with Micah Dalton; Playing Eddie’s Attic Tonight, May 11

Resident ATL folk-soul singer-songwriter Micah Dalton has reemerged with a new full length album. A departure from his previous records, Blue Frontier showcases Micah’s musical versatility yet still maintains the groovy undertones one would expect from a Micah Dalton record. From the bittersweet “The Way Our Seasons Change”, introspective “Eyes to See, Ears to Hear”, and soulish opening track “Bad Blood”, the songs of Blue Frontier are as accessible as they are thoughtful. We caught up with Micah before his show tonight at Eddie’s Attic. Here’s what he had to say:

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Probably a gospel singer named Larnelle Harris when I was 10. I loved him.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

They’ve always been the smaller ones. Probably The Masquerade (heaven) when I was 21 or so. It was just me and a guitar to about 20 people, but I was mixed perfectly. Right amount of reverb and compression on my vocal that really informed my performance.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Wow. This is tough. Probably Simon and Garfunkel at Phillips Arena. I saw Ryan Adams on his ‘Cold Roses’ tour twice and had a very college-aged experience with him and his music. Both (Ryan Adams) were great shows and more improvisational in a good way.

Gig you would most like to play?

Any gig with excellent sound to tons people who know and love my songs.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Bill Withers, Bonnie Prince Billy, and Paul Simon 25 years ago all playing on each others’ sets!

Go see Micah Dalton TONIGHT May 11th at Eddie’s Attic

5GB With Rhett Miller Of The Old 97′s; Playing Eddie’s Attic Monday May 14th

May 11, 2012 5 Gig Bytes, Gigs No Comments

Rhett Miller is the front man and main songwriter of the hard-charging rock ‘n’ roll quartet the Old 97’s, as well as an accomplished solo artist. In addition to his nine studio albums with the 97’s (most recently The Grand Theatre Volume One and The Grand Theatre Vol. 2 in 2011), he has released four solo albums; 1989’s Mythologies, 2002’s The Instigator, 2006’s The Believer, and 2009’s Rhett Miller. Miller is set to release his first live covers album, The Interpreter Live at Largo, on November 22, 2011 on his own recently established label Maximum Sunshine Records.

In addition to his music being featured in countless films and television shows, Rhett has appeared in an episode of the NBC hit series 30 Rock and the Old 97’s were prominently featured in the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy, The Break Up. Primarily known for his songwriting and awe-inspiring live performances, Rhett is also a critically-acclaimed author whose work has appeared in several books and such well-known periodicals as Rolling Stone, McSweeney’s, and The Atlantic.

He is hard at work on a new solo album currently slated for a 2012 release.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

My parents took me to a Kingston Trio gig at a dinner theater in Dallas when I was about 5. I loved their energy, their harmonies and the way they seemed to enjoy their job so thoroughly. I remember wondering if they ever got tired of playing “Blowing In The Wind”. Now, I know that to be a tough question to answer. Probably, they weren’t as excited to play it after all those years, but they probably appreciated the response it earned from the audience.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

They say that in sports, one must have a short memory. I believe that is also true in music. My best gig was on April 20th of this year in Austin, TX. I played one song on a Johnny Cash tribute on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Then, during the encore, I shared the stage with Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, among many others. It was a huge honor and a total blast.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Don’t laugh. David Bowie on the Serious Moonlight Tour when I was a kid. Such a big show. He played tons of stuff from his heyday. When he came off stage before the encore, it just so happened to be on my side of the stage and I could see him as he smoked a cigarette and waited for the applause to build. I knew then that this was the job for me.

Gig you would most like to play?

I would have most liked to play Johnny Cash’s 80th birthday gig if he were still alive.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

The aforementioned Cash, Willie Nelson, Cheap Trick, The Kinks, The Clash, Bowie and Elvis Presley. Why not?

Catch Rhett Miller Monday May 14th at Eddie’s Attic

5GB With Dan Navarro; Playing Eddie’s Attic Tonight, May 10th

May 10, 2012 5 Gig Bytes, Gigs No Comments

Dan Navarro has been a songwriter for artists like Pat Benatar, The Bangles, Jackson Browne, Keb’ Mo’, Dave Edmunds, The Tempatations, Dionne Warwick, Dutch superstar Marco Borsato, The Triplets, Austin outlaw legend Rusty Weir and many more. As a recording artist, he toured alongside with longtime partner, Eric Lowen, in the acclaimed acoustic duo, Lowen & Navarro, and, since 2009, as a solo singer-songwriter increasingly on demand on the national concert circuit. He’s also known for his work in film and TV, including the current smash hit The Lorax, plus Happy Feet (1 & 2), Rio (“Real In Rio,” nominated for a 2012 Oscar), Ice Age (2 & 3), Robots, The Mexican, The Emperor’s New Groove, Envy; Prison Break, Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show; recordings with Neil Young, Andrea Bocelli, Luis Miguel, Jose Feliciano, Susanna Hoffsand Jon Anderson of Yes; and commercials for Shakey’s Pizza, McDonald’s, Toyota, Coca-Cola,Honda, El Pollo Loco, Nationwide and literally hundreds of others. He is playing at Eddie’s Attic tonight and joined us for our 5GB series.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Because I grew up in a small border town, on the Mexican border in California, there weren’t opportunities to see major acts where I lived. So my first concert was at college, Jose Feliciano at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1970 or so. My second gig (far more memorable) was Neil Young at Royce Hall at UCLA in 1971, before Harvest came out. Ramblin’ Jack Elliot was the opener. Neil was solo acoustic, and played most of the stuff that would end up on Harvest — Old Man, A Man Needs a Maid, and especially The Needle and the Damage Done. The recording on Harvest is from that exact concert. So when the applause starts, I’m in there somewhere.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

There are several that stand out. The Birchmere in Alexandria VA in 1994, Wolf Trap in DC in 1991, The Barns if Wolf Trap in 1993, Park West Chicago 2006…

But probably my all time favorite is Park West, Chicago, January 28 1994. We had a sold out house (roughly 800 people) and it was recorded live for WXRT FM. My partner Eric Lowen had flown home three days before, from Portland Maine to Los Angeles, for the birth of his twins. He made it with an hour to spare. He then rejoined us on the road for another two weeks. That show was the first one after his kids were born, and lent a celebratory air to the entire evening. Plus someone tried to scalp tickets to me for my own show. He wanted $50 for a $12 ticket. What a riot.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

It’s very difficult to top Bruce Springsteen at The Roxy Theatre in LA in 1975. A 600 seat room, and he was on the cover of Time and Newsweek in the same week. He owned the room, and gave an inspired, energetic set that knocked me on my ass. I never saw pop the same again.

Runners-up: Neil Young at Royce Hall, UCLA, 1971; Pink Floyd doing The Wall in London, 1980; Linda Ronstadt at McCabe’s Guitar Show 1975 — she was on top of the charts, but the capacity at McCabe’s is 150. She did all bluegrass and folk, none of her hits. It was magical; Jackson Browne at McCabe’s, same year; BoDeans at The Coach House, San Juan Capistrano CA, 1986; The list goes on…

Gig you would most like to play?

The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. It’s an amazing old theatre, with great sightlines, and the tradition alone — Grand Ol’ Opry used to broadcast from there — is enough for me to want to play there. There are several others…Newport, Telluride, Strawberry, Bumbershoot Festivals. Mountain Stage in West Virginia. It’s a long list. Truth told, I’ve played most of the places I would have wanted to play. I’m a lucky guy.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Band wise or personnel wise? Band wise, I’ve had my dream lineup twice:

John Hiatt, Shawn Colvin and us, at Constitution Hall in Washington DC, on a 3400 seat sellout.

Lowen & Navrro & Friends at Folk Alliance in Austin 2006. That featured Eliza Gilkyson, Wendy Waldman, Gretchen Peters, Tom Prasada-Rao, Freebo & Photoglo, Joel Rafael, Jimmy LaFave, The Burns Sisters, Ronnie Cox & Jack Williams, Jeff Berkley, and more. A magical night.

I’d open for Jackson Browne anywhere on the planet, in a heartbeat. Ditto Bob Dylan or Bruce Cockburn.

As for players, my dream lineup is Hutch Hutchinson on bass, Jim Keltner on drums, Greg Leisz on guitar, Phil Parlapiano on keys. And I’ve been lucky enough to play and record with all those guys.

Catch Dan Navarro Tonight May 10th at Eddie’s Attic

As a recording and touring artist with longtime partner Eric Lowen in the acclaimed acoustic duo Lowen & Navarro and, since 2009, as a solo singer-songwriter increasingly on demand on the national concert circuit. voice actor in major motion pictures, television series, commercials and recordings, including the current smash hit The Lorax, plus Happy Feet (1 & 2), Rio (“Real In Rio”), Ice Age (2 & 3), Robots, The Mexican, The Emperor’s New Groove, Envy; television series Prison Break, Family Guy, American Dad and The Cleveland Show; recordings with Neil Young, Andrea Bocelli, Luis Miguel, Jose Feliciano, Susanna Hoffsand Jon Anderson of Yes; and commercials for Shakey’s Pizza, McDonald’s, Toyota, Coca-Cola,Honda, El Pollo Loco, Nationwide and literally hundreds of others…See him tonight at Eddie’s Attic.

5GB With Catie Curtis; Playing Eddie’s Attic Tonight, May 8th

May 8, 2012 5 Gig Bytes No Comments

Boston singer/songwriter Catie Curtis has played a variety of venues ranging from Chicago’s legendary Old Town School of Folk Music to the White House. her upcoming album, Stretch Limousine on Fire (out August 30) features performances by drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Jennifer Condos, both of whom are currently touring as part of Ray LaMontagne’s Pariah Dogs. She joined us for our 5GB series before her show tonight at Eddie’s Attic.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Tiny Tim at a town hall in South Portland, ME. My parents took me when I was six. My dad loved “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.” The first big arena show I bought tickets to was Journey in Portland, ME. We got there early and were happily pressed up against the barrier by the front of the stage. I loved it. At the end I snagged their set list and Neal Schon’s guitar pick.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

I had such a blast touring with Lilith Fair, the first time around, and performing Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” with Sarah McLachlin, Bonnie Raitt and Natalie Merchant. But the best gigs, where I lose myself and feel most connected to the crowd, are always in the smaller clubs, like The Tractor Tavern in Seattle and Eddie’s Attic in Decatur.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Lucinda Williams and Morphine at SXSW in Austin in the 90′s. Everyone was up on their feet swaying and drinking and it was like a cauldron of deliciousness.

Gig you would most like to play?

I have my officiant’s license, so I sometimes officiate weddings and play a song for the couple. So I would like to marry Jodie Foster– I mean, marry her to her bride of course.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Jay Bellarose (who drummed on my last CD “Stretch Limousine on Fire”) on drums, Kevin Barry on guitar, Jennifer Condos on bass, Elana Arian on fiddle, and different guest vocalists for every song– Emmylou Harris, Chris Martin (Coldplay), and Joan Armatrading… for a start!
