Don’t Refer to Them as the “Come Back Kids!” Avant-Pop Trio OMNI Takes Lo-Fi to An Aesthetically Beautiful Place, With Debut LP Deluxe: My One-On-One With Co-Founder/Lead Singer Philip Frobos

Home to nearly 5.6 million residents, Atlanta is somewhat of a seething metropolis still searching for its’ unique identity, akin to an adolescent claiming that, “who they are today, is what they will be tomorrow.” With so many people relocating to Atlanta, the city has an unearthly way of feeling like this “adolescent metropolis” will one day soon spontaneously combust from within. From deep within this mantle lies a “cultural pressure cooker” that has often times produced rare gems. These rarities have been presented to me, in the form of great local musicians and the foreigners that have now claimed Atlanta as their musical hub. One such band, that I was graciously granted the opportunity to chat with is Atlanta’s own, Avant-Pop trio OMNI.  OMNI is the offspring of best buds Philip Frobos (lead singer/bass), Frankie Broyles (guitar) and […]

Throwback Thursday: Same Kopecky. Hold the Family

The second album from Nashville-based six-piece Kopecky, Drug for the Modern Age, takes the many shake-ups the band’s endured over the past few years and turns them into inspiration for groove-driven, melody-heavy alt-pop that’s intensely emotional and strangely exhilarating. Formerly known as the Kopecky Family Band, the group looks at such life-altering events as the […]

Throwback Thursday – Photobook: Death Cab for Cutie @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre 8/11/11

For 17 years, we’ve followed the coming-of-age story of alternative rock band Death Cab for Cutie. Now with the release of their eighth studio album, we are introduced to a slightly more nuanced and mature sound that tells of love lost, the realities of adulthood, and a band trying to hold itself together after co-founder and […]

Throwback Thursday: Guitar Legend Dick Dale @ The Earl 4/23

Dick Dale is an American surf rock guitarist, known as The King of Surf Guitar. Pioneering on Eastern musical scales and experimenting with Reverbnation, he worked closely with Fender to produce custom made amplifiers including the first-ever 100-watt guitar amplifier. He pushed the limits of electric amplification technology, helping to develop new equipment that was capable of producing distorted, “thick, clearly defined […]

Throwback Thursday: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion @ The Earl 4/16

On stage and in the studio, Jon Spencer has destroyed and rebuilt American roots music with such ferocity and wild abandon, that it’s hard to believe there is anything left. It’s been twenty years since Jon Spencer Blues Explosion first pressed ‘record’, and twenty years since Spencer and his A-Team of sonic terrorists tore up the indie-rock […]

Throwback Thursday: Interview with Paul Deakin of the Mavericks

We don’t know many bands that can go from “plush, pre-rock pop ballads” to “peppery Tejano rhythms” (Billboard), but one thing’s for sure: We love the ever eclectic sound of the Nashville band led by frontman Raul Malo. That’s why, after 13 months, the guys have returned to give us Mono, an album full of fresh but […]
