Q & A with MUTEMATH playing for Winter Wonder Jam @Atlantic Station Sat., Dec. 22

Electronic, indie rockers, MUTEMATH, have scored the headlining spot at the last week of Winter Wonder Jam at Atlantic Station this weekend.  They have played Bonnaroo, been nominated for a Grammy, and helped on the Transformers theme song.  Their latest album, Odd Soul, has broken new ground for the band as they have collaborated more on the lyrics (which they had never done before), and brought in religious influences from their Louisiana upbringing.  See what they had to say to us at AMG before the last weekend of Winter Wonder Jam.

What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you? or at your show?
We had a streaker at Bonaroo one year, and every now and then someone will storm the stage during an instrumental song and try to rap or do a backflip. I’ve only had one bra thrown at me in my career. For the most part our fans seem to be well adjusted.

What is the funniest moment you have had as an artist/band so far?
On stage Paul has been know to split many a pair of pants. I am notorious for falling off stage or for falling off of the drums when I stand on them. One time I destroyed Rob Thomas in a dance off (wasn’t even close).

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
I find that if I brush my teeth right before I go on stage my beats are tighter.

If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?
Rhinoceros

How do you connect with a crowd?
While I’m performing I like to pretend that I am like an animal at an exhibit that they have payed to observe….a rhinoceros for example.(bonus points for using the same answer twice)

How did you come up with your band name?
Initially we were just “Math” and we were more of an electronic duo. The name “Math” was taken so we had to change it to something we couldn’t get sued for.

What is the best way to write music?
In solitude.
