Luis’ Three Picks: A Weekend of Shows in Atlanta – Alex Chilton Tribute, Megafaun, 500 Songs for Kids

As a 9 to 5’er, every weekend is like a mini-Christmas. After five days of early mornings and painful traffic jams, I get two days to sleep in, stay out late, and drink ungodly amounts of cheap beer while watching bands!

So what’s on the books this weekend?

Alex Chilton TributeFriday, April 30 – Star Community Bar
Sort of the underdog music legend, Alex Chilton (Big Star, the Box Tops) passed away earlier this year. In honor of Mr. Chilton, the Star Bar in Little 5 Points is hosting a tribute concert and raising funds for the American Heart Association  tonight. The Young Antiques, Anna Krammer, Johnny La Rocha, Tous Les Jours, the Pinx and many more will take the stage. More info at StarBar.net

MegafaunSaturday, May 1 – the EARL
One of my favorite things of spring time is touring bands. It’s a known fact that bands, like most wildlife, come out of hiding in the spring – sometimes with new records and new tours! It’s all very exciting. Folk band Megafaun make their grizzly way to the EARL this Saturday. The band plays sweet tunes and have sweet beards. Count me in.

500 Songs For KidsSunday, May 2 – Smith’s Olde Bar
It’s night four of the 10-night rock and roll fundraiser known as 500 Songs For Kids. Already in its fourth year, the Songs for Kids Foundation hosts this amazing annual event that raises funds for children’s hospitals, camps and research centers. 500 songs are performed throughout the 10-night extravaganza – this year it’s “The 500 greatest era-defining songs.” Hundreds of bands, solo artists and special guests grace the stage every year – so make sure to make it out at least one night!
