5GB Interview with Bubba Sparxxx: Playing at Peachtree Tavern, Sat. Jan 26th

It seems like Country Rap is starting to take over mainstream. With the recent success of Colt Ford and The Lacs along with current “rap style” hits by country mega stars Jason Aldean (Dirt Road Anthem), Toby Keith (Red Solo Cup) and Tim McGraw (Truck Yeah), one would think that this is a new concept. But if you are a true hip-hop historian you would recall that this movement actual began in 2001 with the release of Bubba Sparxxx’s debut album “Dark Days, Bright Nights”. The video for the first single “Ugly” featured Bubba and pals in the mud with pigs, on tractors and performing in front of a house covered with bug lights. If that’s not the epitome of Country, then nothing is. We caught up with Sparxxx before his show at Peachtree Tavern this Saturday!

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Outkast, at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL. Spring 1996.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

Hands down. Outkast, Goodie Mob, myself, and pretty much the whole Dungeon Family, at The Tabernacle, January 2002. Unbelievable. A dream come true for a Georgia boy that grew up idolizing those guys.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?
Blink 182, in NYC. Fall 2003. I was opening up for those guys on a mini-tour, and that was the first show. Honestly, I didn’t know a whole lot about them going in, but Travis, and those dudes taught me a lot of what I know about putting on a show that night.

Gig you would most like to play?

I would like to do a “Country Rap Tunes” showcase at the Grand Ole Opry!

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

The Dungeon Family, Bun B, Colt Ford, The Lacs, Big Krit, and myself!

See Bubba Sparxxx at Peachtree Tavern Saturday, January 26th!
