Interview: Jacob & the Good People @ Eddie’s Attic 1/22

 Jacob and Good People

Although Jacob has shared stages with the epic sounds of bands like Dave Mathews Band, Robert Randolph, and Rusted Root, he still creates his simple style of music with the idea that less is more. His music is sparse, quirky, and addictive, and his songs will be hummed for hours after you hear them. He will play to an audience at Eddie’s Attic this Wednesday, and Andrew Chatwood talked with him about some of his experiences.

What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you or at your show?

We have a very interesting fan that has severe OCD. He comes to every gig in a white monogrammed button down, dress slacks, and briefcase (full of lyrics/calendars/media) and does paper work during our set. He has exact calculations of how many attended shows, states visited, etc. I believe I would put it at number one most eccentric behavior.

What is the funniest moment you have had as an artist?

I once had a pair of white pleather pants on stage while performing at Bullwinkle’s in Tallahassee FL. While dancing I split my pants from belt to the back  of my knee, and had to do the rest of the performance facing the crowd. Luckily I had drawls on!

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Lots of booze.

If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?

Simple

How do you connect with a crowd?

I like to talk on stage to a crowd, like I was talking to one person in my own living room.  No glamor, no persona, no facade. I have never been Steven Tyler, and I think people relate.  Just a simple guy,  making noise. I always want them to feel like I would be a cool guy to smoke a joint with, or grab some breakfast.

How did you decide on your band name?

We are a duo. Drums/vocals and guitar/vocals. The name of the band is my first name, and everyone always called my drummer “Good People” when describing him.  So we just started promoting ourselves as Jacob and the Good People.

What is the best way to write music?

Paul McCartney was quoted as saying “I am not sure where this stuff keeps coming from, but I hope that it keeps coming” and that is entirely how writing has always been for me,  minus the slew of hit songs and records.
