What’s Up Monday 10/13

Happy Columbus Day, Atlanta! For those of you lucky enough to be celebrating a 3-day weekend (or pretending it’s still the weekend), top it off with one of these great shows!

David Ryan Harris at Eddie’s Attic

David Ryan Harris wanted to be able to write his own songs so he experimented with a few instruments until he found the guitar; the one that fit. He was captivated upon hearing Son House, Robert Johnson, Prince, Stevie, Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin, Bad Brains, Fugazi, Sly & The Family Stone, Japan, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Bill Withers, Bob Dylan and they taught him to ignore preconceived notions about popular music, because music should have no ceilings, no colors, no lines.  Only possibilities.

General admission tickets are $14 in advance, $18 at the door. Table seats are $17.50 each and must be purchased in multiples of 4. Online, phone, and outlet sales close at 5pm on the day of the show. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Sonata Arctica at The Masquerade

Sonata Arctica are no strangers to having fans cross several state lines to meet them, or to making entire venues sing themselves hoarse when they play their high-speed, keyboard-laden, and righteously melodic heavy metal music. Stirring up youth in the hearts of many and acting like a sonic beacon for fans seeking the ultimate adrenaline high, Finland’s ambassadors of light and hope have toiled through difficult times long enough to harvest an award-winning career. Naming the new album after the Finnish word for “dreams,” Unia takes a decidedly progressive and theatrical direction.

Tickets are $20 in advance, VIP Tickets are $65. Show starts at  7pm.

Bass Drum Of Death at 529

When Bass Drum of Death started touring the rock club circuit outside Oxford, Mississippi, several years ago, there was a legitimate concern that the band’s appeal might be limited to fans of the garage scene. With a seemingly never-ending series of tour dates, BDoD nonetheless transformed rooms full of normally too-cool-to-rock indie crowds into a mob of sweaty, stage-diving maniacs. Meanwhile, Madison Avenue, eager to cash in on hip cachet, took notice. Since the release of 2011’s GB City, “Get Found” has been featured in FOX promos for the NASCAR season. Rockstar Games’ megaseller Grand Theft Auto V helped to promote last year’s self-titled album.

Tickets are $10. Online, phone, and outlet sales close at 6pm on the day of the show. Doors open at 9pm.
