5GB With Dent May; Playing The Earl, Tuesday, July 24th

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele were chosen as one of the Best New Bands of Mississippi by Boston Phoenix Annual 50 Best Bands in America. He was chosen by indie rockers, Animal Collective, to perform at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival 2011. He joined us for our 5GB series before his show tomorrow night at The Earl.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

I saw the New Kids On The Block in Biloxi, MS with my sisters when I was 5 or 6. I was too young to remember much of it, but the insane scale of the production definitely had an affect on me. I’ve loved pop music since day one.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

My favorite would have to be playing the Animal Collective curated ATP. Seeing and hanging with so many of my favorite musicians was inspiring. I was coming out of a rut where I felt super burned out on music and really life in general. That weekend reminded me why I make music and the first place and pushed me to work harder.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

It would have to be something at my home in Mississippi, the Cats Purring Dude Ranch. Real Estate on Easter Sunday was pretty special. Grimes literally breaking our floor open is a great memory, even though I was terrified. Also, Animal Collective played in Oxford in 2009. Frat kids were crowd surfing to the openers Black Dice, who are one of my favorite bands ever. I never thought I’d see that happen.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

I’ve always wanted to play a show in outer space. With space tourism becoming a real thing, I feel like it’s absolutely possible in my lifetime. In the more immediate future, I’m planning a festival in Destin, FL called Destin Purring.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

I would invite all my friends’ bands from Mississippi: Bass Drum Of Death, Dead Gaze, ILLLS, Flight, Gray Things, Child Star, etc. Then we’d bring out the surprise guest headliner: The Black Eyed Peas.

Catch Dent May, Tomorrow, July 24th @ The Earl
