He’s My Brother She’s My Sister Return To The Earl Jan. 16th

By Eileen Tilson / @tktalt_tn

Known for their jovial live performances, folk musicianship, and yes, their tap dancing, He’s My Brother She’s My Sister have shared the stage with Fitz and the Tantrums, The Devil Makes Three, Spindrift, Miranda Lee Richards, The Knitters, The Growlers, Local Natives, Frank Fairfield, Alexander Ebert, and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zero’s. Brother and sister Robert Kolar and Rachel Kolar split vocal duties, with Robert on guitar and kick drum and Rachel on tambourine. Their voices range from boisterous to introspective, from breezy to emotive. Lauren Brown adds full-body percussion with her fluid tap-dancing. Oliver Newell adds stand up bass with joyous flair. Aaron Robinson plays lead guitar on a lap slide, veering from nuanced psychedelica to American roots riffs. And Satya Bhabha adds unconventional cello playing which is at times sweeping, and at other times bellows like a husky fiddle. See them at The Earl on Jan. 16th

New Video from Fun. and Janelle Monae for ” We Are Young”

She might only have a small role to play, but it’s still exciting to see our lovely Janelle doing some new songs. And Fun. aren’t too shabby either. We’ll be excited to see the band when they return to Center Stage on March 9.  Fingers crossed for a special appearance by our favorite tuxedoed girl!

My Morning Jacket Debut Video For “Holdin On To Black Metal”

August 2, 2011 News, Videos No Comments

Louisville, Ky.’s My Morning Jacket take over YouTube today with four clips featured on the site’s homepage, including the premiere of the eye-popping, surreal video for “Holdin On To Black Metal.”  The guys gave a early preview of the video  last night when several members posted it on their Google+ accounts, resulting in one of the first music video premieres shared within Google’s new social network.

The video for “Black Metal” was filmed during whirlwind period shortly before the quintent’s new album, Circuital, was released while the band was getting ready for their big hometown show (filmed by Todd Haynes for AmEx’s Unstaged series.)  The band kept things local by working with the Louisville-based Sole Solution Studio for the clip, and filmed it at the idiosyncratic local watering hole Jim Porter’s Good Time Emporium.  The video also includes footage from the Jacket’s electrifying 2011 Bonnaroo performance.  The guys kick off the next leg of their U.S. tour tonight in St. Louis and will play select dates with Neko Case as the opener during August.

Ok Go Release New Interactive Music Video

July 29, 2011 News, Videos No Comments

And they have done it again! Always setting musical trends, OK Go teamed up with director Trish Sie (sister of lead singer Damian Kulash), the modern dance troupe Pilobolus and a team from Google to create the latest HTML5 Chrome Experiment and musical experience. The project showcases the latest in modern browser technology, using 12 separate windows to create a kaleidoscopic dance that is partially choreographed by the viewer. At the beginning of the experience, users are invited to type a message in English, Japanese, or any language using the Roman or Katakana alphabets, and the message is incorporated into the dance. The New York Times Magazine will run a photo feature on the making of All Is Not Lost this Sunday, July 31.

To celebrate the video’s premiere, OK Go and Pilobolus will screen the clip and perform a live version of “All Is Not Lost” tonight at the Joyce Theatre in New York City. The pre-order for the video, which will be released on August 9, launches today at http://www.okgo.net . A 3D version of “All Is Not Lost” is also available beginning today, exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS™ system, Nintendo’s newest hand-held system which lets users experience 3D games, take 3D pictures and watch 3D videos without the need for special glasses.

Bits and Bobs: The Coathangers, The Selmanaires, Little Tybee, Lera Lynn and More

- The Coathangers celebrate their “Live at The EARL” 7-inch, where else, at the EARL on November 26, with support from All Night Drug Prowling Wolves and Wolves and Jackals.

- The Selmanaires are one member less, at least for a while, as bassist Tommy Chung is moving to New York. He played his last gig with the band on Saturday at the Drunken Unicorn, but says that the band is going to try and keep things going despite the divide.

- In what appears to be a slightly odd pairing, Little Tybee are supporting Macy Gray at The Buckhead Theatre on October 27.

But if you don’t manage to get to that gig, then the group will also be playing the free StreetFood Soiree event at The Hub this Thursday, October 21. There will be food from Yumbii, Westside Creamery, King of Pops, Souper Jenny and more. Could you ask for more?

- If you were wondering whatever happened to that lovely voice behind Athens’ Bird & Wire, then wonder no more. She is Lera Lynn and she is playing a release party for her new single “Bobby, Baby” at The Five Spot on Wednesday, October 20. Check out the video over on S L O W Records video site, and swoon.

- Modern Skirts and Tealights will play benefit show Rock4Research at Vinyl on Friday, October 22. The annual event will raise money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation.

Bits and Bobs: Prince, Janelle Monae, Madonna, Take That and More

- The Great Purple One known as Prince announced yesterday that he will be embarking on a huge tour soon, and among those stylish girls and guys who will be joining him (like Sheila E.) is our very own Janelle Monae. He’ll start off the jaunt with a residence in New York, which is fine, as long as he brings the tour down our way. Rolling Stone was at the press conference and has more details. Our favorite quote? “Bring footspray because it’s gonna be funky.”

- Madonna wrote an only-slightly-snarky-by-Madonna-standards letter during the filming of A League Of Their Own, and Letter of Note have it up on their blog, thanks to the Hard Rock Memorabilia website.

- The newly-reunited (with Robbie Williams) Take That have released video for their new single “The Flood,” which features the strapping lads in a rowing competition. Idolator has the video.

- The Little Five Points Halloween Festival and Parade is this weekend and you should really go. There will be music from bands like The Pinx, Grinder Nova and Young Antiques, food from Westside Creamery, Sheik Burritos, Pallookaville Corndogs, Kings of Pops and more, an artists market, and, of course, the coolest Halloween parade in the city.

Bits and Bobs: 40 Nights of Rock & Roll, HOToberFest, MoogFest, Mashable & Regator

- We’re stoked to finally see the first trailer for 40 Nights of Rock & Roll, a film that director Scott Sloan and writer (ex-Paste editor) Steve LaBate started work on back in April. Check it out over on Paste.

- Fall beer season is kicking off, and the first beer festival of the season is HOToberFest, this Saturday at the lovely Glenwood Park. There’s a great free-for-all part of the park, with some great live music and beer for you to buy, and of course the ticket-required beer tasting areas (including VIP area) with over 130 incredible beers for you to taste. Don’t forget to buy your tickets now!

- Celebrating the wonderful Robert Moog (American music pioneer, inventor of the Moog synthesizer), the annual MoogFest is taking place again in Asheville, N.C., October 29-31. There will be a ton of incredible artists – from DEVO to MGMT, Big Boi to Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation to Cee Lo Green – as well as some fascinating panels and demonstrations – like theremin performances, a panel on The Power of Modular Synthesis and a panel on The Birth of the Minimoog. It’s sure to be a mind-blowing weekend.

- For a second year, Mashable is teaming up with blog aggregator Regator to create Mashlanta 2.0, a party of mammoth proportions. It’s full open bar, with a killer DJ (Joseph Fuller of Nonsense at Noni’s) and the best social media, tech, press, bloggers networking opportunity you can find in these parts. You’ll want to get your tickets now because this gig is on Thursday and there’s not many spaces left.

Bits and Bobs: Inman Park Restaurant Week, OK Go, DJ Shadow, Decatur Craft Beer Festival

- Mmmmm, it’s one of the tastiest times of the year, with restaurant weeks piling up one after the other. This week it’s time for Inman Park to take the spotlight, with the likes of Parish, Rathbun’s, Shaun’s and more showcasing special $15, $25 or $35 prix fixe menus. And 20 percent of the proceeds go to the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s (ACFB) Atlanta’s Table project. So there’s no reason not to partake!

- OMG OK Go and puppies! As if their videos couldn’t get any more entertaining and adorable, the band has done another very choreographed video (“White Knuckles”) with some amazing dogs. You can buy the hi-def version for several different prices, all proceeds going to the ASPCA.

- One of the most amazing DJs in the world, the phenomenal vinyl-holic DJ Shadow, is coming to Atlanta for a show at The Loft on November 9. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 1 at 1 p.m.

- Just in case you hadn’t heard, tickets for The Decatur Craft Beer Festival sold out in a matter of hours earlier this week. If you didn’t get tickets, go grab some for HOToberFest in Glenwood Park – it’s another amazing beer festival with over 170 craft beers.

Bits and Bobs: Ludacris, Jenny & Johnny, The Drums, Cee Lo

- Ludacris will be helping Tower Beer, Wine & Spirits reopen its Doraville location on Saturday, and in return the liquor store is giving Luda a $10,000 donation for his Ludacris Foundation, which supports Atlanta youth and the community. We love it when everybody wins.

- Jenny Lewis and her beau Johnathan Rice just dropped their Jenny & Johnny record, I’m Having Fun Now, and you can download a free mp3 of “Animal” HERE.

- Fellow hipsters The Drums have premiered a video for “Down By The Water” on Stereogum. They will be playing The Loft with Surfer Blood on September 15.

- The final fabulous video for Cee Lo’s “Fuck You” has arrived, and we just love it. Go check it out on Idolator if you’re somewhere that’s alright with a few dozen F-bombs.

Bits and Bobs: Black Lips, NARIP, Kylie Minogue, FUN

- Spin has been talking to Black Lips about the Atlanta hooligans recording a new album, and they also chat about the usual other stuff: skulls, Osama Bin Laden, the Braves.

- Local lass-around-town Eileen Tilson (who heads up Leslie Fram and husband’s artist management company Tipping Point Entertainment Group) has been appointed to the board of NARIP (The National Association of Record Industry Professionals) in Atlanta. Congrats Eileen!

- The wonderful Kylie Minogue has been pretty busy this week. First she did a crazy surprise gig at an out-of-the-way pub in England (which you can check out on Idolator) and then she performed “Get Outta My Way” on “America’s Got Talent” (which you can check out on Zap 2 It). We love the huge video montage behind her, documenting all the past Kylies – definitely a bonus for the fans! Now she just has to do a proper American tour, and actually stop down here.

- Those popular indie pop kids from New York who call themselves FUN will be coming back to Atlanta for a show at The Loft on December 11. Tickets for this gig happily go on sale a lot sooner – September 2.

Bits and Bobs: Vonnegutt, Big Boi, Beach House, Eels, Goat Farm

- Local rap-rockers (it’s not as bad as it sounds, really) Vonnegutt are planning on re-releasing their EP, The Appetizer, again on Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon label, but this time with Manchester Orchestra’s Favorite Gentlemen label on board too. The lads have been making themselves known recently, with their “Follow Us” collaboration for Big Boi’s recent release, and even performed the single on “Late Show with David Letterman” last night. Check out the video over on Idolator. You can also download single “Bright Eyes”.

- Beach House are coming back to Georgia, but won’t be playing Atlanta. They will be stopping off at the 40 Watt in Athens instead, on October 16. Tickets go on sale August 27 at 10 a.m.

- Spinner is streaming the new Eels album Tomorrow Morning right now.

- Sounds like the Nameless Festival went down a treat last weekend at Goat Farm. Ohmpark has videos of All The Saints, Balkans and Abby Go Go all performing at the too-cool-for-school “venue.”
