NME Magazine named Athen’s based indie rockers, Reptar, one of the most buzzed about bands this year at SWSX. Their latest album Body Faucet was just released ( on iTunes http://itunes.apple.com/us/preorder/body-faucet/id514323158) and frontman Graham Ulicny joined us for our 5GB series before their upcoming shows at The Goat Farm & 40 Watt.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
Probably a Willie Nelson while i was still in my mom’s uterus.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
Playing a sold out show at the Bowery ballroom a couple weeks ago was pretty amazing. It was crazy to look out at the crowd and think that all those people liked our band.
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
This band from Athens called Powers put on an incredible show at Caledonia a couple years ago I think. This band called Pataphysics totally blew my mind at SXSW. Its hard to say though. Live music is an in the moment thing that should not be quantified or rated.
Gig you would most like to play?
Y’all love the word gig, huh? I would love to play a show in the middle of the woods with a generator to a completely naked audience. We would have a campfire and cook veggie dogs and sleep with each other.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
Metallica featuring George Clinton, George Clinton featuring Prince, and Prince featuring Metallica and George Clinton.
Catch Reptar Tomorrow May 2 at The Goat Farm
and May 4th at 40 Watt Athens

You guys really are spoiled for choice this weekend. The city’s hip older sibling is hosting a little shindig with some college rock legends, while the still-cool but much-older uncle spoils ale lovers rotten with a sold-out craft beer extravaganza. And between all that, there’s a ton of kick-ass rock shows to boot. Choose wisely, and have fun! … Continue Reading

The reasons to worship at the Church of Neko are many:
It could be that fiery red hair.
It could be her uninhibited desire to make and be around art.
It could be her love for the environment that often comes out in her songs.
How about the fact that she made music writer Jack Pendarvis giddier than his usual self when he got to interview her for Oxford American Magazine (at William Faulkner’s home no less)?
Her acerbic wit, perchance? (If you do nothing else, click on that link.)
I’ve already mentioned that mane of hair, right? … Continue Reading

It would be fair to wonder if a band like Jimmy Eat World, who has been making music for more than a decade, would have lost a proverbial “beat” in their live performance. It was in fact just the opposite when skinnier, younger-looking frontman Jimmy Adkins walked on the stage at 40 Watt Club in Athens on Monday night. In the last 15 years they have released seven studio albums, and experienced everything success has to offer them, and yet they gave the kind of energy filled, professional performance we have come to expect from the veteran band. The small club setting gave the kind of intimate feel that would be desired by any long time fan. … Continue Reading

Drive-By Truckers’ three-night stand at the 40 Watt has become a near annual event, as the band opens the tour for each new album in their adopted hometown of Athens. The opening dates of the “Go Go Boots Tour 2011″ were no different as Friday night found the band in front of a sold-out crowd full of long-time fans as well as drunken frat boys who had heard of the face melt that is a DBT “Rock Show.”
The band is known for their consistently impressive (and surprisingly long) live performances as well as their innate ability to personify “the Southern thing.” Led by the excellent songwriting and vocals of Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, DBT has continued to impress critics worldwide even as their expected rise to super stardom has taken longer than most expected. This, however, is a very good thing, because it allows us fans to see them play in bars as intimate as the 40 Watt when they could just as easily sell out venues four to five times its size. … Continue Reading

Over the course of Joanna Newsom’s short but impactful career, critics have clamored to define her, to harness the wild strands of her style and composition into separable, ornate distinctions. Her early work borders on unlistenable, depending on what kind of ears you have. As her career has progressed, her work has certainly gained palatability, but still bristles with an idiosyncrasy few musicians of her generation possess. … Continue Reading
Boo! Hope I didn’t scare you – but it’s already that time again. That’s right – despite the balmy weather outside, it’s Halloween! We have our own spooky recommendations over HERE, but here’s a round-up for the whole weekend, scary or not.
Looks like the temperatures are coming down just a tiny bit, which means this weekend will be much more bearable and you should be getting out to even more shows now that there’s less fear of melting into the pavement. So we’ve got a nice little selection of outdoor gigs, as well as some great club gigs for those who still aren’t quite ready to deal with non-air conditioned spaces. And we also have a slew of on-sales, which just goes to prove that this fall is going to be a whole bunch of music madness, and we can’t wait. … Continue Reading
- Local rap-rockers (it’s not as bad as it sounds, really) Vonnegutt are planning on re-releasing their EP, The Appetizer, again on Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon label, but this time with Manchester Orchestra’s Favorite Gentlemen label on board too. The lads have been making themselves known recently, with their “Follow Us” collaboration for Big Boi’s recent release, and even performed the single on “Late Show with David Letterman” last night. Check out the video over on Idolator. You can also download single “Bright Eyes”.
- Beach House are coming back to Georgia, but won’t be playing Atlanta. They will be stopping off at the 40 Watt in Athens instead, on October 16. Tickets go on sale August 27 at 10 a.m.
- Spinner is streaming the new Eels album Tomorrow Morning right now.
- Sounds like the Nameless Festival went down a treat last weekend at Goat Farm. Ohmpark has videos of All The Saints, Balkans and Abby Go Go all performing at the too-cool-for-school “venue.”
