What’s Up Wednesday?

Good Morning Atlanta! I won’t try and be witty at this morning, because frankly I haven’t finished my cup of coffee yet. Regardless, here are your events for this fine Wednesday, hope you get into some kind of trouble.

-The older rockers will be at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater for the Eagles.

-Yes, this might be music for those folks who like to feel like rockstars while sipping on wine coolers, but Canada’s version of rockstars, aka Nickelback, can still pack out arenas. They will be at Phillip’s tonight with Bush, Seether and My Darkest Days.

-Athens always seems to pump out the coolest bands! Take Reptar for example, they are blowing up on Alt-Rock radio stations and are playing tonight at The Goat Farm.

-For Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, 2011 was a year packed with over 200 performances, including such mega-musical events as Farm Aid, Bridge School Benefit, Stagecoach, and Country Throwdown,  late night shows, Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Jimmy Kimmel Live…they are at Vinyl tonight, go check them out.

-East Atlanta indie kids, The Mad Flight are rocking it out at The Earl tonight.

-It’s always a surprise at the Drunken Unicorn, you never know who just might be playing. Tonight make sure to catch Wizard Rifle.

-If you haven’t heard of Bombino, then you are missing out on  a young Tuareg guitarist and songwriter,  whowas raised during an era of armed struggles forindependence and violent suppression by government forces. His music is powerful, check him out at The Five Spot.

-Leave it to the Masquerade to book bands that will give you nightmares. Such is the case tonight where you can see (with one eye closed) Behemoth Watain, The Devil’s Blood, In Solitude, Legion X, Royal Thunder.

What’s Up Tuesday?

Well Good Morning Atlanta! It’s that time of the year where the girls dress in just barely what they can get away with, and boys in skinny jean shorts are in abundance…..but oh yes, the music is aplenty! There is some pretty great stuff going on tonight, here are some shows that I think you should check out:

-Man of man, this man is SCANDALOUS!! And Awesome. Go see Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears tonight at The Earl...with all the dancing  you will do, you won’t even have to work out today.

-Are you a fan of Black Kids like I am? Well over at The Drunken Unicorn tonight you can catch Gospel Music (featuring Own Holmes of Black Kids).

-San Diego Christian hard rockers, P.O.D. will be bringing their divinely inspired tunes to The Loft tonight. Joining them is Should Harbor….should be a hell of a time.

- NYC indie rockers, Woods, made their way down past the Mason Dixon line and will be performing tonight at 529.

-Singer-songwriter Kate Campbell learned the piano at age seven before switching to the guitar as a teenager during the folk-rock heyday of the 70s. She is having her CD-release party tonight at Eddie’s Attic.

-Skinny jeans and white belts will be in abundance at The Masquerade where Rise Against, A Day To Remember, Title Fight will be getting the kids feeling all pop-punk like.

What’s Up Wednesday?

Happy Hump Day y’all! This week is flying by, I just can’t seem to get caught up! Sort of a quiet evening in way of music events here in Atlanta, but here are some events I think are worth checking out.

-Doria Roberts and Eddie Tigner. If you don’t know who they are, 1) slap yourself, 2) GOOGLE THEM NOW, and then 3) Buy your tickets right now, cause this show will sell out. They are legendary and THAT good. See Doria at Eddie’s Attic tonight for her CD release party.

- Faun and a Pan Flute is the new sound exploration from a garden of Atlanta musicians. Check the new collection out tonight at The Earl.

-Florida ambient surf rockers, Millionyoung are at the Drunken Unicorn tonight…they are a Pitchfork favorite, so expect to see a lot of hipsters wearing cut off Hypercolor shirts.

-Over at the Masquerade, you can check out La Dispute, Balance and Composure, All Get Out, Sainthood Reps.

What’s Up Wednesday?

Happy Hump Day Atlanta! Semi-quiet night in Atlanta today, but still cool stuff to check out!

-Join Eddie’s Attic for a night of Motown soul as the ATL Collective presents The Supremes’ iconic 1966 album, “The Supremes A’ Go-Go.” With Performances from Molly Parden, Jeremy Ezell of The Well Reds, Michael Kai, The Factory, Larkin Poe and featured artist Chantae Cann.

-Get your twang on over at Smith’s Olde Bar for Lauren St. Jane & the Dead Westerns

-Over at the Drunken Unicorn get yourself hipsterfied with Capillaries, Set & Setting, and Odist.

-If it’s electronica you are after, head on over to the 529 where Helix will be spinning with Broodlings, Moist Ghost, and Vax.

5GB With Youth Lagoon; Playing The Drunken Unicorn, March 22

March 21, 2012 5 Gig Bytes No Comments

By Eileen Tilson

Twenty-two year old Trevor Powers, whose musical venture is called Youth Lagoon, has had a long year. Not because he’s been endlessly touring or pursuing some wild dream, but because of life – the life of a kid going to college, being in love, dealing with heartache, and just living. Pretty impressive coming from a kid whose debut album got him an 8.5 review on Pitchfork. Loved by hipsters around the country, Trevor joined us as part of our  5GB series before his show tomorrow night at the Drunken Unicorn.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

A school choir concert.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed at?

Just recently played in Tokyo, and it was definitely one of the best shows/nights. Very respectful crowd at the show, then wandered the city and got completely lost, and ended the night with karaoke in an extremely trashy bar.

What is the best gig you have ever been to?

Tough.. one of the best was seeing Caribou at Sasquatch Festival in 2010. Superb performance.

Gig you would most like to play?

I’d like to play the first music festival that takes place in space. It’s just a matter of time.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

In order to get the perfect bill, some people would have to rise from the dead. These people would be Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash, and Elvis. Also on the bill would be Radiohead.  It’d definitely be a strange mix of music but no one would care.  The show would take place in my backyard, and it would be a giant BBQ bash.

Catch Youth Lagoon tomorrow night at The Drunken Unicorn.

What’s Up Wednesday?

It is an indie-rockers paradise today in Atlanta! Yesterday we announced that The Flaming Lips are headlining Centennial Olympic Park’s “Party in the Park,” and the fun is just starting! Here are your midday fun picks!

-Shinobi Ninja is a Brooklyn-based party rock circus with an explosive live show. The band’s music mashes up the sounds of 311, The Beastie Boys, Sublime, and Rage Against the Machine. Check out the fun tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-Opening for acts like B.O.B, Devin da Dude, Big Tuck, Atlanta’s own Boome, will be at Vinyl tonight with The Skywalkers.

-Check out Hunter Valentine w/ Jen Urban & the Box tonight at the Drunken Unicorn.

-Originally started as a bedroom project, Swing Set is now a full band consisting of ex-Waterliars/Long Knives rhythm section Thad Goad and Chris Poma and Sodajerk frontman Alex Brenner. See the new formed glory  at The Earl this evening.

The countdown to SXSW has officially begun! Thousands of musicians will be descending upon Austin to drink, sing, and generally cause chaos upon the pretty Texas city. So while the rest of the musical world is stocking up on FunYuns, maybe you should be checking out one of these worthwhile bands before they become “famous.”

-OBERHOFER. He is all the rage in NYC. Signed to the ever so popular Glassnote Records. Produced by world famous record maker Steve Lillywhite. AND he is playing Atlanta tonight at the Drunken Unicorn. Remember that little band Mumford & Sons? Yeah, they started like this too. GO SEE THIS.

-Guitar in one hand, suitcase in the other, British singer/songwriter Kevin Rowe arrived in the U.S. in 2010 in pursuit of the elusive magic that America alone has to offer: the unwavering belief that dreams can come true. Go support him tonight at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-Chinua Hawk counts himself very fortunate in his career to have performed with Celine Dion in front of a crowd of 30,000 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He has also written songs with Wyclef Jean and performed backing vocals on his CD, The Preachers Son, and worked in the studio with producer/rapper Kanye West on Talib Kweli’s song, “Just To Get By.” See him tonight at Vinyl.

-Surf rockers, Mr. Gnome, will be mixing their sweet and salty sounds tonight at The Five Spot.

-From the looks of their Facebook page, NYC’s the K-Holes are out to have a good time. Their stage antics seem to be all over the place, and they are playing The Earl tonight, for what should be an entertaining hipster filled show.

-Folk singer-songwriter, Anais Mitchell, is anticipating her upcoming February release, “Young Man in America,” but it’s been quite a journey in between. Hugh Blumenfeld from Sing Out! Magazine describes her style, “Details are offered like clues or keys to the reality all of us sense is imminent and eternal beneath the surfaces of things.”  Joining her tonight at Eddie’s Attic is Athen’s son, Ken Will Morton.

-Trey Songz and Big Sean will be holding court tonight at the Fox Theater..

What’s Up Monday?

Only in Atlanta, could you open up your concert calendar, just to find out that the Queen of Soul herself is playing on a Monday…There are a lot of old school royalty in this city tonight, pick a cool event and get to it!

-ARETHA. This woman needs no introduction. The Queen of Soul herself is bringing down the house tonight at The Fox Theater. Just do yourself the favor and go.

-Legendary front man of the Hold Steady, Craig Finn, is at The Earl tonight, for what will be a legendary filled hipster show.

-Smith’s Olde Bar loves musicians. Every Monday they host their Miller Site series in order to give new artists exposure. Tonight the Miller Lite Concert Series Presents: Wiggs live at Smith’s Olde Bar. Showtime Starts at 9 pm.

-Montreal-based musician, Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, is at the Drunken Unicorn tonight;  Pitchfork  listed her 2012 album, Visions, under their Best New Music category, so I am sure there will be a good crowd.

-Please don’t forget to support your own! It is Songwriter’s Open Mic Night at Eddie’s Attic, the home of so many of our favorite musicians.

February 23, 2012 Atlanta Music News, Gigs No Comments

Um highs today in the 70′s?!?!?! I can’t help but to think that mother nature is just playing a little trick on us all. “Oh yeah, whip out the shorts and flip flops, and then right when you start getting a little color back in your cheeks BAM! I’m gonna drop the temps on you again.” Whatever Mama nature, we are gonna brave you anyway. Here’s your picks:

-It’s night two of Mike Cooley of the Drive by Truckers rare solo acoustic show at The Earl. This show is SOLD OUT so I hope you got yourself some tickets early!

-For those of you who know Zac Brown Band’s Clay Cook, the chances of spotting him tonight at the Fox Theater are pretty high. His favorite celebrity crush, Kelly Clarkson, will be there showing off her pipes. Sure to be an interesting crowd.

-Adron is the nom de guerre of Adrienne McCann, young singer and songwriter who has been lately rejuvenating the pop music scene in Atlanta, Georgia. Adron blends Classical harmony with the playfulness of ‘60s Brazilian Tropicàlia and the sentiment of 70′s songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Harry Nilsson. See her tonight at Eddie’s Attic.

-The Romans are going to be a bad you will be very familiar with in the upcoming months. Led by the multi talented Aaron Whitehouse, I have been a fan since day one. Make sure and catch their show tonight at the Drunken Unicorn before you will only be able to see them in a bigger venue.

-Tennessee twanger and picker, Rayland Baxter is known for his storytelling songs. Should be a great night for his show at Smith’s Olde Bar.

-Australian pop singer, Cody Simpson, will be whooing the wee ones tonight at Center Stage. So let this be a warning to you, there will be a swarm of screaming teenage girls on the corner of 17th and West Peachtree.

-And the hipsters will be coming in droves to the Star Bar in Little Five Points tonight where  former keyboard player/percussionist with Washed Out’s live band, Phil Jones his new band Dog Bite. Joining him tonight are Mirror Mode and Divine Interface.

What’s Up Wednesday?

Happy Wednesday Atlanta! I like Wednesdays, they make me feel like the week is almost over, but also it usually means the start to a great lineup of good tunes coming to town. Tonight, for your aural pleasures, I introduce you to your Wednesday night events.

-Beautiful Little Fools bring a fresh blend of indie-Americana, merging classic country sounds with power pop and other elements of today’s best independent music. Each song has a unique voice with comparisons being drawn to the Tennessee Three, Mountain Goats, Ryan Adams, and Elliott Smith. Joining them tonight at The Earl is Nashville’s finest, Andrew Combs and  Athens’ answer to Golden Smog, The Jayhawks, Wilco, and even Ween, The Granfalloons.

-Bernadette Seacrest (photo above) is a modern day Renaissance woman. Having at one time worked as a sometimes fetish model, makeup artist and clothing designer for the iconic clothing/shoe company Nana; She now embodies the sultry  jazz chanteuse with a dirty south flair . Don’t miss her Bernadette and her bassist Kris Dale tonight at Eddie’s Attic.

-Philly based hip-hoppers, Chiddy Bang, debut mixtape entitled ‘The Swelly Express’ has received over 100,000 downlaods in a month.Sometimes using samples from artists like MGMT (they went to the same school), Passion Pit and even Mary Poppins for inspiration, Chiddy Bang completely alters the tracks turning them into something of their own. See them tonight at Vinyl.

-Swedish.Death.Metal. Can you just imagine what kind of crowd is going to be at Center Stage tonight for guitar shedders, IN FLAMES, who will be joined by  Trivium, Veil of Maya & Kyng.

-At the ever so awesome Drunken Unicorn, where Calm White Noise, Writer, and Antbrain will be entertaining hipsters.

Happy Wednesday everyone! I sat in a music industry meeting yesterday, filled with people my own age who were so excited to be in the industry. And I couldn’t help but to think to myself, what do they really love about it? My own personal answer is: I just love the magic. Nothing on earth beats going to see your favorite band in concert and feeling that high. I hope you agree. Music is the universal language.

-I LOVE the ATL Collective. They continue to put out some bad ass shows at Eddie’s Attic. Tonight join them as they present:  An Interpretation of Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush. Featuring performances by Micah Dalton, Book Club, and The Shadowboxers. PLUS! Stay after for a very special performance from David Berkley before his show tomorrow

-All the cool kids play in East Atlanta! Tonight at the The Earl, going We All w/ The Old Fourth Ward and Eller.

-At the Drunken Unicorn the Soylent Red “Derelict Sunrise” CD Release Show will be happening! Joining them is  Waking the Bates.

-Drake White continues his residency in the Atlanta Room at Smith’s Olde Bar.

Oh we are in the last days!!! Two days till vacation, and I am desperately trying to keep my focus! Even though this is not the busiest week for music, here are your Monday outings:

-Nashville’s happiest couple, Amy Grant and Vince Gill are in town spreading some Yuletide cheer. Join them at the Fox Theatre as they perform their famous 12 Days of Christmas.

-Glammed out dance poppers (who prefer to see themselves as a metal band…strange), Blood on the Dancefloor will be at the Masquerade as part of their Tis the Season to be Killing tour. Again, strange. Joining them  is the hip hop sounds of JJ Demon.

-Featuring members of Anti-Flag, Dandelion Snow and The Code, White Wives be blowing your ears out at the Drunken Unicorn.

-And I would be willing to bet that their will be some Christmas carolers over at Eddie’s Attic tonight as part of the weekly Songwriter’s Open Mic Night.

Ok, let’s face it….although there are a lot of good shows going on tonight, there is really only one you should be concerned with….

-The mighty Foo Fighters are back in town and will be putting on the best show of the night at the Gwinnett Arena. Joining them are one of my all-time favs, Social Distortion, and newcomers and Music Midtown darlings, The Joy Formidable.

-It’s indie electronica night at The Masquerade where Swedish new wavers The Sounds, will be glow-sticking it up with Natalia Kills and The Limousines.

-Make sure and check out Circle Takes the Square with City of Ships at the Drunken Unicorn.

-And if you just feel like singing yourself, then head to Eddie’s Attic for his Songwriter’s Open Mic Night!
