5GB With David Mayfield Parade; Playing Smith’s Olde Bar Saturday June 2nd

David Mayfield is the “other” voice and lead guitarist, as well as a contributing songwriter for folk rock favorites Cadillac Sky, whose last album “Letters In The Deep” was produced by Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) but his role as a member of the Texas by way of Nashville quintet is just one of the many musical paths this Grammy-nominated artist has journeyed. He is playing Smith’s Olde Bar tonight, and joined us for our 5GB series.

What was the first gig you ever attended?

Well, I vagely remember singing the Johnny Cash song “A Boy Named Sue” with my parents at one of their gigs at a honkey tonk when I was about 5 years old. As for the first concert I remember, I saw Bill Monroe play in ohio when I was about 9. I thought he was some kind of super hero. He looked like a walking statue.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

This always seems to change, which I guess is a good thing! For a while it was opening for Mumford & Sons in NYC, then that was replaced by opening for Willie Nelson in California. Now its safe to say my favorite gig so far was my own headlining gig at the Camp Jam in the pines festival in New Jersey I crowd surfed for the first time. I’m not a small man, that was pretty scary to be over 200 lbs and run and jump onto a crowd of screaming folks, then get paid to do it. I don’t understand my life.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

I saw Chris Issak at the Orlando Calling festival last year, he blew my mind. Also Darrell Scott played an acoustic set at the Appilachian Uprising Festival in Ohio a few years ago and I still haven’t gotten over that.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

Is American Bandstand still around?

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Me first, so I can relax and watch: Randy Newman, and since I’m dreaming lets choose a few from the grave: Roger Miller, George Carlin, & Jimmy Martin.

Catch David Mayfield Parade, Saturday, June 2nd at Smith’s Olde Bar
