5GB With Red Fang; Playing 529, Nov. 7th

RED FANG deals in kick-ass heavy rock. On their Chris Funk (DECEMBERISTS) produced, Vance Powell (KINGS OF LEON, WHITE STRIPES, RACONTEURS) mixed Relapse debut Murder the Mountains, the quartet wave a middle finger at fashion and bet the proverbial house on substance over style. The incredible “Wires”, “Number Thirteen”, “Hank Is Dead”, and “The Undertow” are just a few of an onslaught of highlights on this front-to-back set of great f%$king songs. They are playing the 529, and joined us for our 5GB series.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Def Leppard with I think Europe at the Denver Nuggets arena. 1986? 1987? I don’t remember the exact year. The 2nd concert I ever attended was also Def Leppard, this time at Red Rocks. I think we were 14. One of the guys who was with us got a BJ from a super drunk girl in the row in front of us. I think it was his first sexual encounter. He was really really embarrassed.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

I would say it is a many ways tie and the ones I can think of right off the top of my head are The Underground in London, Inferno Club in Sao Paolo, Durer Kert in Budapest, and Plan B in Moscow. Those four stand out in my head right now as being really amazing crowds where we also played really really well and had tons and tons of fun.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Jesus Lizard / Nirvana at the Gothic Theater in Denver (Dinosaur Jr. was headlining, but I left before they played and found the Nirvana dudes out back). I was obsessed with Nirvana at the time. It would have been Spring / Summer of 1991, before Nevermind came out. This also happens to have been the first concert my younger brother, Colin, got to go to. Lucky bastard.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Hm…not in this order at all, but it would be these bands:

Fed X
YOB
Unwound
Nirvana
Soundgarden
Nomeansno
Jesus Lizard
Neil Young
Hot Snakes
The Fucking Champs

I have seen all these bands live and they are all amazing, and I would see any of them live again at a moment’s notice.
