5GB With The Wombats; Playing The Loft, October 26

By Eileen Tilson/ @tktalt_tn

If you haven’t heard of Liverpudlians’ The Wombats, it just means that you live under a rock, albeit maybe a very small rock. The band is HUGE in the U.K. and of course, its kid sister, Australia. But, don’t think that means the band is just a cookie cutter U.K. pop band, cause they most definitely are not. These boys are legit fun. They are playing with The Postelles tomorrow at The Loft, and lead singer Matthew Murphy joined us for our 5GB series, before their show.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Hmm, I believe it was Radiohead. I was about 13, so it must have been around the Kid A tour. I was kind of a late bloomer when it came to music, but I remember going to see the show with some school friends, and thinking it was the most intense thing I had ever seen.

What is the best gig you’ve ever been to?

We played with Interpol in Romania. It was the  most fun I had watching a band. We were drunk and ended up crowd surfing.

What is the best gig you’ve ever played/performed at?

I don’t know if there has been just one, honestly. Glastonbury was pretty amazing; very prestigious for a British band like us to play there. The NYC shows were awesome.  The Australian crowd was simply insane…in good way. The fans and the reaction from the crowd was incredible. We went from playing sold out arenas in Australia, to playing clubs in America, and they have all been great. Honestly, 8 or 9 of our top ten all time best shows have been on this album’s tour.

What gig would you most like to play? (festival or event or a location or a venue)

Having a great slot at Reading or Leeds would be great. Maybe somewhere in Brazil? We are desperate to play in South America. Obviously Nashville.

What would the line-up be at your dream gig? Who would you play with?

Depeche Mode, Elliot smith, Smashing Pumpkins….in that order.
The Wombats play The Loft Wednesday, October 26.
