Atlanta Music Guide Weekend Preview 08/09/18 – 08/12/18

Here’s a quick look at some of the best events Atlanta has to offer this weekend Thursday, August 9th through Sunday, August 12th!

Black Tusk w/ White Nails at The Earl

Thursday, August 9th at 8:00pm

Black Tusk was born from sweat. There was blood, and maybe a few tears, too, but more than anything, it was sweat that marked the earliest years of Savannah, Georgia’s Black Tusk. Formed in 2005 by three lifelong friends—bassist Jonathan Athon, guitarist Andrew Fidler, and drummer James May—the band welded together a three-pronged vocal attack, dirty punk, sludgy heavy metal, and a big fat dose of Motorhead to create what they called “swamp metal.”

Hailing from Quebec City, Canada, Whitenails is a stoner rock band, influenced by the sounds of Pentagram, Black Sabbath and Kyuss, Whitenails adds a psychedelic touch to their debut album First Trip. Heavy riffs are not lacking.

New Realm Presents: All The Locals w/ Kilroy Kobra and Arc & Stones at Smith’s Olde Bar

Friday, August 10th at 9:00pm

All The Locals: It’s been said the newest members of Atlanta’s booming music scene have a sound that’s a clear “amalgamation of blues, neo-soul, and rock-and-roll”. Giving Pink Floyd and Maxwel a run for their money, All The Locals are no strangers to the industry. Praised for their effortlessly original and creative approach to songwriting, A.T.L’s self-titled debut EP is due out later this year. “We all know good music when we hear it. [Our music] feels good”, Deno, A.T.L’s drummer extraordinaire, has commented. Well, Deno, the public agrees.

Kilroy Kobra: Atlanta psychedelic rock band Kilroy Kobra comes together as a 6 piece band blending modern psychedelia with funk rhythms and retro-rock outfits. In September 2016, they released their daring debut LP, “Man of the World” which throughout had a careful balance between spaced out legends Tame Impala or Pink Floyd and funky classics David Bowie or Steely Dan.

Arc & Stones: Bringing an array of gritty-bluesy styles, Arc & Stones’ sound combines the fast paced energy of NYC where the group was established, and the soulful identity of Nashville where they now reside. At their core, Arc & Stones are an unabashed act – inspired by two very different types of rock’n’roll, the group finds a way for them to coexist.

Athens Pop Fest w/ Guided By Voices, The Mummies, Ex Hex, Flasher and more!

Wednesday, August 8th through Saturday, August 11th

Event Link

What began 15 years ago as a fun get-together for like-minded friends has evolved into a destination event that draws people here from all over the world. But even as Athens Popfest has expanded through the years—more bands, more days, more people—we’ve always worked hard to maintain that same intimate feeling we started with. Athens Popfest isn’t just one more multi-day event full of bands and crowds. It is an annual gathering of curious music fans, artists, travelers, and locals. People fall in love (2007 saw an onstage marriage proposal), bands get discovered, memories get made. All of it here in Athens.
