In 1992, Eddie Owen opened the doors to Eddie’s Attic with the goal of creating a space to showcase the talents of emerging singers and songwriters. Over the past twenty-two years Eddie’s Attic has changed ownership only a few times, and has been owned and managed by Dave Mattingly & Georgia Music Hall of Famer Alex Cooley since 2012. Still, Eddie’s maintains its reputation as a venue for great live music; in part due to its listening room with great acoustics, where patrons are asked to silence phones and truly listen to the music.

Eddie’s Attic is also home to one of the longest running, and best open mic nights in America. Songwriters’ Open Mic occurs nearly every Monday night, and burgeoning artists are given the opportunity to perform two songs each. The best acts are invited back for an encore performance, and the chance to win cash prizes and to compete in the Bi-Annual Open Mic Shootout. Some big name artists have even gotten their start at Open Mic Night, including John Mayer, Jennifer Nettles (of Sugarland) and Shawn Mullins.

Eddie’s Attic is the type of venue that continually books great artists. They claim their success come from maintaining a strong tie to the Atlanta music community by hosting groups such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in a non-traditional classical venue, or celebrating Black History Month with Atlanta artists.

Still, without a doubt the success of Eddie’s Attic can also be attributed to the one of a kind shows and occurrences that happen on their stage. For example, talent booker Andrew Hingley remembers a time when T-Pain jumped onto the stage for an impromptu jam session, and also Brandi Carlile’s set when she asked the audience to pick the songs. Events like this, as well as the big names who started at Eddie’s who return every now and then, are truly what make Eddie’s Attic an Atlanta music scene staple and a nationally recognized name.
