5GB With Two Gallants; Playing Terminal West Tonight, Sept. 12th

San Francisco folk rock duo, Two Gallants, just released their latest album, The Bloom and the Blight, that portrays the melodic fury matched with the eloquent, confessional lyricism that has made Two Gallants an enduring favorite of both fans and critics. They are playing Terminal West tonight and joined us for our 5GB series.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

I think the first show I ever went to was Jawbreaker at the Fillmore. But I have a blurred memory of seeing Huey Lewis and the News with my mom when I was about 4 or 5 at a county fair but that might have been a dream.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

To be honest the last time we were in Atlanta was one of the more memorable shows. It was at the drunken unicorn and everyone was drunk, climbing on stage, falling on us and on each other in the that sweaty little room. At least two people puked on one another right in front of the stage. At some point this guy dragged his girlfriend on stage and proposed to her. I hope it’s lasted for them.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Kanye West at Roskilde Festival in like 2005. We played earlier in the day and spent most of the evening running around and catching shows. Saw Immortal Technique whose second record is one of my favorites. Eventually made our way to see Kanye West on the main stage. He had a string quartet and a couple background singers and a DJ. Nothing frivolous. It was very elegant, one of the more beautiful shows I’ve ever seen. Next time I saw him was a similar situation at Bonnaroo at like 4am. One of the worst shows I’ve ever seen.

What is the gig you would most like to play?

We’ve always had a distant dream of doing a boat tour. Building a stage on a ship and go from port town to port town. I’ve been very fortunate to have seen much of the world while playing music but that would be a whole new angle from which to witness it. And weather permitting, we would never have to set up or break down our gear.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Reverend Gary Davis, Operation Ivy and The Flamin’ Groovies in a convalescent home.
