6281637

March is Women’s History Month! In honor of all the women who rock year round, we’ve put together a list of our top girl power songs! Whether you’re a fabulous feminist or a mild-mannered advocate, these tunes will awaken your inner Venus and make you feel like a NATURAL WOMAN!

10. Kool Thing– Sonic Youth 1990
Girl Code: This song evokes images of “pretty women-esque” mini skirts and Kelly Bundy bandage dresses.
But what’s better than a hot body in a sexy dress? A sharp mind, clever wit, and self-reliance! Go girl!
Favorite Line:
“I just wanna know, what are you gonna do for me?
I mean, are you gonna liberate us girls”

9. Rebel Girl- Bikini Kill 1993
Girl Code: Rebel Girl is the ultimate ode to girl crushes! This song teaches us to appreciate and uplift our sisters. Big girls are never threatened by another woman’s shine!
Favorite Line:
“That girl thinks she’s the queen of the neighborhood
She’s got the hottest trike in town
That girl she holds her head up so high
I think I want to be her best friend, yeah”

8. Black Sheep- Gin Wigmore 2011
Girl Code: Our gal Gin is willing to take on the weight of the world in the 2011 women’s anthem Black Sheep.  A true badass is fearless and unapologetic!
Favorite Line:
“I got lots of jealous lovers that all wish they had me back
Got a pistol for a mouth, my old mama gave me that
Making my own road out of gravel and some wine
And if I have to fall then it won’t be in your line”

7. Hit and Run- LoLo 2014
Girl Code: Cardinal girl rule- friends first! If you love your hubby, then by all means, stand by your man. For everyone else, the bond of sisterhood is sacred. Even though we don’t suggest going about it the way Lolo does, a little revenge is a good thing, especially with your girls by your side. Remember, smart girls don’t get caught!
Favorite Line:
“I was waiting in the getaway car
you were stuck in the hotel bar
he was a proper Englishman
you had one last pint before the cops broke in
you poured the gasoline and
I drove into the flames
history will hate us
but they’ll never forget our names”

6. ***Flawless- Beyonce 2014
Girl Code: Ok, we didn’t wake up like this, but what woman can resist this feminist anthem that reminds us true confidence comes from within?!
Favorite Line:
“We say to girls,
You can have ambition
But not too much
You should aim to be successful
But not too successful
Otherwise you will threaten the man.”

5. Transgender Euphoria Blues- Against Me!
Girl Code: This song is a little outside-the-box, but we love how it celebrates womanhood from all perspectives.
Favorite Line:
“You’ve got no c*** in your strut
You’ve got no hips to shake
you know it’s obvious
But we can’t choose how we’re made”

4.  I Wanna Be Evil- Eartha Kitt 1955
Girl Code: Aw the story of a good girl gone bad…classic! (think Sandy O., Rihanna, Miley Cyrus) Ms. Kitt purred about her dark desires way before any of these ladies threw out their poodle skirts for leather cigarette pants and bustiers.
Favorite Line:
“Prim and proper, the girl who’s never been cased,
I’m tired of being pure and not chased.
Like something that seeks it’s level
I wanna go to the devil.”

3. Pretty Girl Rock- Keri Hilson 2010
Girl Code: Wow! It’s been almost 5 years since Ms. Keri Baby had us pretty girl rockin’. While the lyrics focus on her um…”fondness of self”, the video pays homage to all the pretty girls who rocked before her!
Favorite Line: Don’t hate me ’cause I’m beautiful (’nuff said)

2. Run the World- Beyonce 2011
Girl Code: Every decade has one, and this is the girl power anthem of the hour! Every line in this song is dripping with feminism. We play along, but every woman knows who really holds it all together!
Favorite Line:
“Boy I know you love it
How we’re smart enough to make these millions
Strong enough to bear the children
Then get back to business”

1. I’m a Woman- Peggy Lee 1963
Girl Code: Every woman knows there’s nothing like the classics! Whether it’s a classic wool trench, a good pair of leather loafers, or a well-tailored blazer (calm down girls, we’ll save the fashion talk for another blog), simple and original is always best. Nothing says its better or more straightforward than Peggy Lee’s I’m a Woman. If you’ve ever wondered how the superwomen in your life manage to do it all, just take a listen!
Favorite Line:
“I can rub & scrub this old house til it’s shinin like a dime
Feed the baby, grease the car, & powder my face at the same time
Get all dressed up, go out and swing til 4 a.m. and then
Lay down at 5, jump up at 6, and start all over again
‘Cause I’m a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I’ll say it again”
