5GB With Catie Curtis; Playing Eddie’s Attic Tonight, May 8th

Boston singer/songwriter Catie Curtis has played a variety of venues ranging from Chicago’s legendary Old Town School of Folk Music to the White House. her upcoming album, Stretch Limousine on Fire (out August 30) features performances by drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Jennifer Condos, both of whom are currently touring as part of Ray LaMontagne’s Pariah Dogs. She joined us for our 5GB series before her show tonight at Eddie’s Attic.

What’s the first gig you ever attended?

Tiny Tim at a town hall in South Portland, ME. My parents took me when I was six. My dad loved “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.” The first big arena show I bought tickets to was Journey in Portland, ME. We got there early and were happily pressed up against the barrier by the front of the stage. I loved it. At the end I snagged their set list and Neal Schon’s guitar pick.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?

I had such a blast touring with Lilith Fair, the first time around, and performing Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” with Sarah McLachlin, Bonnie Raitt and Natalie Merchant. But the best gigs, where I lose myself and feel most connected to the crowd, are always in the smaller clubs, like The Tractor Tavern in Seattle and Eddie’s Attic in Decatur.

What is the best gig you have ever seen?

Lucinda Williams and Morphine at SXSW in Austin in the 90’s. Everyone was up on their feet swaying and drinking and it was like a cauldron of deliciousness.

Gig you would most like to play?

I have my officiant’s license, so I sometimes officiate weddings and play a song for the couple. So I would like to marry Jodie Foster– I mean, marry her to her bride of course.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Jay Bellarose (who drummed on my last CD “Stretch Limousine on Fire”) on drums, Kevin Barry on guitar, Jennifer Condos on bass, Elana Arian on fiddle, and different guest vocalists for every song– Emmylou Harris, Chris Martin (Coldplay), and Joan Armatrading… for a start!
