5 GB With Fanfarlo; Playing Vinyl, Saturday March 10

By Eileen Tilson

London based indie pop group, Fanfarlo, formed in 2006 under the leadership of  Swedish musician Simon Balthazar. The band started catching attention with their single, “The Walls Are Coming Down,” which helped land them on a ton of popular TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, House, and even on the  2010 film The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.  We chatted with bassist, Justin Finch, before their show tomorrow night at Vinyl.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

My first gig was my brothers in a band called Eebahoo. In the mid 90s.  It was like some weird funk rock band.  They were kinda cool. The first gig I paid to go see was Reef at Brixton Acadamy. Man, I thought it was awesome. I got stoned and crowd surfed the whole time.

What is the best gig that you ever played/performed at?

I think the gig at The Scala, London the other day was one of the most enjoyable. The crowd was awesome and the sound was good. I was on such a high. But playing gigs in crazy places like South Korea and Istanbul are amazing for other reasons.

What is the best gig you have ever been to?

It’s gonna sound kinda ridiculous, but probably Slipknot at Brixton Acadamy about 12 years ago. At the time I was just so passionate about it and they are so crazy on stage.  More recently, and possibly not as embarrassing, was Einsturzende Neubauten about 5 years ago, which was breath taking.

Gig you would most like to play?

It’s less about actual events than places to be honest. South America would be sweet. I guess I’d love to play Brixton Acadamy. That pretty legendary for me. We’re playing Russia in a couple of months which is very exciting.

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Fleetwood Mac
E.L.O.
Einsturzende Neubauten
Fanfarlo
At Brixton Acadamy would be nice. Don’t you think?
