Interview w/ Markus Schulz; DJ’ing @ Magnetic Music Festival 4/20!

markus-schulz-6423Over the last 10 years Markus Schulz has crafted the individual musical identities of progressive, trance & house into his own unique hybrid sound. The combined influence of his headlining DJ sets; Armada and Coldharbour label releases and highly prominent Global DJ Broadcast radio show have seen him at the forefront of the US EDM revolution. This success has been reflected in weekly sets spun in front tens of thousands, a GDJB listenership up in the millions and critically acclaimed albums, including ‘Do You Dream?’ and most recently ‘Scream’.

Through his natural audience interaction, flawless, intuitive harmonic mixing, unparalleled tune selection and now famous open-till-close sets, he has wowed crowds in every major metropolis. Schulz’s DJ career has largely tracked that of his productions. In the early nineties he was among the first producers to zero in on the hinterland between trance & progressive.

We got the opportunity to interview Markus Schulz! Read below to see what he had to say about his funniest memories, his pre-show rituals and his dream lineup!

What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you at a show?

More kind than strange, but I went through a 2 week period earlier this year around my birthday where fans where bringing cake for me to every show. Needless to say that trips to the gym in between became necessary!

What is the funniest moment you have had as an artist so far?

I got a letter from PETA saying that I was doing damage to the well-being of the world by “slaying unicorns”. No joke!

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

If time allows I try to get a bit of a sleep before every show, just so that I have a good level of energy when heading on stage. And usually have a cup of tea (just as much caffeine as coffee, you know!) in the hotel room before leaving for the club.

If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?

Ah man, ya killing me! One word! Really? Boy, that is a toughie… OK, let’s see. How about ‘frustration-releasing’! I hyphenating that, so it only counts as one!

What would be the lineup for your dream gig?

Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, ELO all performing live. Larry Levan, Danny Tenaglia and Paul Oakenfold on the decks. If there’s room for me, then being on the same bill as all of those guys would be a complete dream.
